There were a slave who could read, but the majority couldn't, although few wanted. Then some privileged slaves received the same education as their Masters or Mistresses. Reading was a skill that only a few free citizens possessed, and monks didn't reach precious symbols for everybody. So reading was a rare skill that made a person important. Moreover, alphabetic characters were designed to be confusing and easy to alter for secret messages. It was possible to write several symbols on top of each other. Then only the one who had a key to the code was able to read the text. It was a common habit to write coded messages in public places.

Casia was one of the privileged slaves and sat on the lessons with her Mistress. The Father of the house allowed that because he wanted his daughter to have a slave who could later assist her with running the household. So learning new symbols for writing and reading foreign languages was relatively easy. Still, sometimes Casia lost her focus on more pleasing matters while Mistress focused on books or stories.
