Outclassed 2 - Page 28 (WIP & PSD)

I start adding a shine effect to Horacio's skin in this page and this was around the time I started thinking "I might be biting off a little more than I can chew with this character".

I don't think I go too much into the technical process of getting the page from sketched to done in these commentary posts and more about planning and page composition so I might as well take a moment to explain that. I first ink the page in a very dark brown color, that's the main lineart layer, I then make a main fur color layer (that also acts as a flats layer, since I use solid colors), there are two other fur layers (for Walter for example, one for the cream colored fur on his chest, and a second one for the darker fur like the hair on his head and spots). For Horacio I use these for his gray beard and some white lines for texture. Then there's a details layer with everything in other colors, like nipples, tusks, eyes, mouth, etc.

Horacio has a couple additional layers, one for the tattoos (same color as the lineart but at 80% opacity to make them look faded and not blend in with the silhouette) and two for body hair, one almost white and another the same color as the lineart. Since the latter two go on top of the lineart, when I'm done shading (a multiply layer at around 30% opacity with the same color as the lineart unless I need an additional one if a character is almost entirely obscured for a panel) I select the shaded areas and lower the value of the light body hair layer so I don't get full on white hair in the shaded areas.

I also have an "extra lines" layer, which are for colored lines in some details like the nipples. I tend to lump in highlights like the tip of Walter, Alfonso and Suarez's noses here, or in Horacio's case the gold texture of his nipple rings for example.

So... yeah, I'm now throwing in a skin reflection layer and two layers for sweat on top of that and it's making Horacio a fairly time-consuming character... I thought taking the clothes off would expedite the process of making the comic and that's KINDA true for suarez because there's less creases and stuff but wow, I did not expect to make the process so lengthy with this one guy.

Damn. All of this definitely makes Horacio a struggle, but if I may, he's certainly worth the struggle!

I’m always impressed with the level of details that has to go into these comics
