That's why she said he wasn't her child and why she doted on Langris so much. It wasn't an uncommon thing for second or third wives of royalty or nobility to try to push their own kid to become the next head of the family, a lot of times by trying to make the oldest kid(s) look bad. That way, their kid would get the inheritance and be able to take of them when they got older. It's a fucked up but historically accurate occurrence.
