I like Ivankov, but I didn't really like this first scene with him. The shooter was obviously no threat to him, but he turned him into a girl unnecessarily against his will? I mean I guess from a readers perspective it shows us Ivan's power, but it seems to go against what he says, freedom and people choosing what they want to be. It left a sour taste in my mouth for the character for a little while.

Yes, that Crocodile used to be a woman is the biggest theory about his past. It also led to the 'Croco-mom' theory, that not only was Crocodile a woman in the past, but that they were also Luffy's mom. Also, it's pretty much universally assumed that it was in a fight with Whitebeard that Croc lost his hand, which is why he's so set on getting revenge. As to Jimbae, Fish Man Karate is about manipulating water. At the highest levels, it allows manipulating the water inside of people's bodies as well. And Jimbae is a grand master of the art.

I certainly won't give you any hate for this opinion. I also really don't like Iva-san forcibly swapping the son's sex, and will not defend it. There are a couple of details that I would point out, however. First, it's true that simply injecting hormones in real life will not change someone's sex, and I can see your point about sending a message to youth that is, at the very least, inaccurate. But virtually all of the powers in One Piece are based on some facts (hormones are a large part of what tells our body what our sex is) and artistic license (Iva-san's hormone powers allow him to change someone's sex). For example: rubber is not bullet-proof, electric shocks do not actually start the heart beating again (Enel), etc. Within the fiction of the universe (which is already absurdist by nature), I think it's acceptable that the way his hormone powers manifest allows Iva-san to do as he does. The second thing is that I don't think Iva-san did anything wrong in regards to the father. The son says that his father travelled to the Kammabaka Kingdom (which implies he did so by choice), and Iva-san says that the father wanted to be a woman. In this case, what tore apart the kingdom and family was prejudice and intolerance, not Iva-san's actions in honouring the father's wishes. Again, even if the son was transphobic that does not justify forcing him to transition himself. I just wanted to suggest another take on those two points.

I said it before, but the Crunchyroll release dates are not true, that’s when the episodes were released on Crunchyroll. 439 released 2010, not 2014.

This will always be one of the parts of One Piece I don't praise. Not only did Ivankov ruin a family based on a lie (gender-swapping can't actually be done genetically), but he also effectively sexually/emotionally abused a son rightfully upset about his dad. Ivan is 100% more bearable/enjoyable after this part of the story. His hormone powers are interesting in fiction, but teach a horrible lesson to the youth in real life. Everything surrounding that scene is golden though. But that one scene is just an unfortunate taint on the series for me. (And, yes, I know people will hate me for this comment. I don't care. It's taboo to say it or think it right now, so someone has to keep saying it.)

I don’t like how the demonstration for Ivan’s powers was to forcibly transition someone but I really don’t think oda meant it to be offensive. While none of this is perfect I’d say it’s pretty good for the early 2000 and I really appreciate the inclusion of queer characters as well as them not being villains. Anyway Stan oda.

I know Luffy is rubber, but he took "bouncing back" pretty literally here, amirite? I also once again hate how the crunchy roll subs aren't even making an effort to translate characters' unique speaking habits. Iva-chan adds a V to the front of first or second pronouns, saying "vi" and "vwe" and "vyou" or "vyours". It's not huge, but really adds to the character.

The manga for these Episodes came out in 2009. The Anime was in 2010, and it went to crunchyroll in 2014. Very progressive for them to cover this topic. Love this series.
