It was Tim Curry in Rocky Horror, I haven't heard about his okama friend, but its certainly more than possible a character has more than one influence.
Garp the Fist
2022-08-24 14:31:37 +0000 UTCApparently he based Ivankov off an okama friend of his who played in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. He bases a lot of characters off people he knows and people in the media (like Enel as Slim Shady and the three Admirals being three big stars of Japanese media) so it's very likely that he's based at least a few of the okama on okama he actually knows irl, like his friend.

2022-03-10 13:57:17 +0000 UTCoda tends to portray the gender fluid people very sterotypical. he tends to make them all good people willing to help and strong. but that doesnt really make it ok to make them look the way he does. He gets better over time at it for sure and has made trans people much better later on. while i dont think oda himself is transphobic i can definitly see why people take a lot of the stuff he does in bad taste. That being said bon clay easily one of my top favorite characters. ones we meet later as well.

2021-06-27 22:26:26 +0000 UTCMe: I found this hurtful and prejudiced, I think I'll avoid it! I do not have ill will to those who engage with it, I simply would like to voice that I'm uncomfortable with the content presented to me. Random dudebro: you're wrong to be hurt and sometimes prejudice is right. Debate me Me: I would not like to argue with you, but you should know that was rude. You, 3 weeks later: the rest of your life will be shit I really wanted to let this go, but it's been nagging at me since I saw it. And y'all are being rude! So here we go. First off, attacking my character for something like this is entirely uncalled for. I honestly would love to talk through how the episodes in question depict trans women and drag queens as ugly predators, as disgusting, and offensive. 5 o'clock shadow is the punchline, and heels are the setup. Sanji is on the run, and all those women want to do is """""convert""""" him--They're dangerous, but not so much that they are worthy of consideration. I would love to talk about these things, but we are behind a paywall, and this space is specifically one for Ruff, not One Piece. But then you had to be personal, and rude. I was around the fandom the days these chapters and episodes were coming out. We went through this discourse then, and turns out!!! They were largely considered to be transphobic. FWIW, a lot of trans ppl were involved in those discussions! It was 10+ yrs ago, but it was transphobic then. It still is now. Regardless of that, I called out NOBODY. Neither of you had to engage with me. Except, of course you did. Because your motivations weren't "oh, we should show this person--their critical thinking just works too hard!!! I am concerned for their wellbeing 🥺" you just wanted to back me into a corner--to have me argue and make you look gallant and """""intellectual"""", or to concede your point. I did neither, so you both were rude. Wild how that works. Oh, and thanks for your concern, 🙃 but my life is going just fine. I need a beer.

2021-06-27 22:25:29 +0000 UTCMaddy, not sure how you deal with life but if you don't watch out you might become just like the people you hate.
2021-06-27 15:59:09 +0000 UTCAnime cannon is the manga. Plus whatever the author says, but for one piece the manga is cannon, everything else is not.

2021-06-10 03:07:50 +0000 UTCHmmmmmmmmm no. This isn't a public feed, so I'm not gonna debate you. I will say that while the premise was written by Oda, much of these episodes are expanded upon by the anime team and so a lot of it falls on them. Also, protip, try not to tell someone who finds something hurtful that they shouldn't be hurt. Bad form.
Maddy
2021-06-10 00:30:55 +0000 UTCbro its not transphobia, oda isn't transphobic at all, this is just showing sanjis personal hell. it being filled with drag queens and all.. No hate to you, i just think you shouldn't get offended by this depiction of trans people as it isn't the only way oda sees them, and i mean cmon, we've all seen some people that look like that in real life lmao
hamsterdam
2021-06-09 23:19:54 +0000 UTCFR I have a hard time w/ the sanji stuff around here, so I might skip around it--no judgement to Ruff, just it's hard for me to sit through the transphobia

2021-06-06 23:16:39 +0000 UTCYou have no idea what a terrifying suggestion that sending Chopper to a cotton candy island actually is
2021-06-04 09:04:39 +0000 UTCSo the term Anime Canon is used on the animefillerlist website. It is a term used for episodes that are not directly adapted from manga chapters but are integral to the anime story and thus should not be skipped. An example of this is the extended Davy Back Fights. There are three games which are not in the manga but with how the anime included them you cannot skip them because it will cause confusion because stuff like how Robin is now in the Foxy Pirates, etc. With these episodes, each Straw Hat got a two panel cover story showing where they landed (plus some manga panels later down the line). These were extended in the anime and thus had a lot of stuff not in the manga but are integral to the anime story. Chopper's for example has not even reached where the cover panels are at and Sanji's has one showing him running from women and the next one revealing who the women are.

2021-05-31 17:18:49 +0000 UTCOther people have explained the Anime canon thing (which I was also not aware of, but grateful to have explained), but I'd say this is where the anime does beat the manga. Oda is just so insane that not every idea he has can make it to the manga pages, so here we can flesh out a lot of things that we only got the bare minimum of in the manga. Like the Loguetown arc, in the manga these "where are the straw hat?" things were very brief, so it's super satisfying to see things in full in the anime. I think you'll appreciate this even more down the line when it comes to Oda really trying to condense the story. He does his best, but it can get confusing unless you have the breathing room that the anime actually relies on to give the source material more time to finish.

2021-05-31 16:52:12 +0000 UTCAbout the Oda crying during the creation of sad scenes. He answered this on a SBS, which is a question corner in every Volume. If you don’t want it to be spoiled, then don’t read ahead. He mentions crying during the Alabasta arc. The specific scene is when Vivi is crying out to her people to stop fighting. He mentions that he had to put his pen down because of how emotional he felt.
Gilmez
2021-05-30 09:32:56 +0000 UTCAbout the anime canon only stuff. Oda had an ingenious way to cover where the straw hats where during the split up by putting it on the cover page. The anime took those pages and made the cover pages into its own story as “Anime Canon”.

2021-05-30 09:27:56 +0000 UTCRemember back during Enis Lobby where Chopper gave Franky a bunch of different drinks (vegetable juice and water) and his personality changed due to the drinks

2021-05-30 02:46:24 +0000 UTCNot sure if someone said it already, but the whole "Hearts of maidens" thing where Sanji is makes more sense for japanese. Basically, that's what they call trans men to women there. They were born a man with 'the heart of a maiden'. So basically everyone on that island, including the animals aparently, are men dressed like women. Kuma sent him to the only place he couldn't simp. ^^
Bill Dieterich
2021-05-30 02:31:45 +0000 UTCYeah its basically what you said anime canon is stuff that was supposed to be in the manga but Oda didnt have time to implement all of his ideas so he used the anime as an opportunity to input those ideas now into the story. So even if they arent in the manga they are still canon content. There are times where anime canon is actual filler like during the Foxy arc where they added some filler episodes in the middle and had to call it anime canon in order for the storyline to make sense with the filler. And btw the name of the island Sanji went to, Kamabakka Kingdom, the word "kamabakka" means "tons of queers/gays/drag queens" LOL they just didnt translate it. The word "kama" or "okama" is a kind of universal word for gay/trans/queer/drag queen in Japanese. Of course Sanji of all ppl got sent to the island of drag queens xD

2021-05-29 22:39:34 +0000 UTCVegapunk was also mentioned by Coby for the first time at the end of Enies Lobby when he told Luffy about how he figured out a way to have inanimate objects eat devil fruits.

2021-05-29 22:38:37 +0000 UTCSo a lot of anime cannon has its roots in the manga but Oda doesn't have the time to expand on it. So he ends up expanding on it in the anime

2021-05-29 21:50:54 +0000 UTCsanji got put on the wrong island he didn't go to amazon lily he went to drag queen island i forgot what the name of the island is again

2021-05-29 21:34:00 +0000 UTCNo one loves this series more then Oda does.
Seraphem
2021-05-29 20:56:15 +0000 UTCThese episodes aren’t really anime canon, they happen in the manga (ch 523/24) to bridge the gap between the arcs, but each straw hats location only gets 1 or 2 pages, and then we see more of them in a cover story during the events of the next arcs. The anime expands on these by adding in bits from the cover story with some Oda guided filler, so these episodes are canon but manga storylines that are greatly expanded.
Gladiuswingzero
2021-05-29 20:55:46 +0000 UTCOda consults on all the filler. In the cases of the anime canon, other comments have covered it well. In the cases of non-canon filler, Oda gives the ok on the stories and the non-canon devil fruits. He makes sure that these episodes don’t harm the story, misrepresent characters and use ideas for devil fruits that he may incorporate into the canon story down the line.
2021-05-29 20:01:19 +0000 UTCOda cried when doing the Vivi's speech when she could not be heard over the fighting of the rebel war Crocodile started. I would also say Oda is the man that laugh the hardest when doing his stories in the whole world! :D
Nanach
2021-05-29 19:46:59 +0000 UTCthere are pictures of straw hats at those places IN MANGA so it is not like something they made up for anime it is just that anime expanded it so like f.e. there is small story on one/two page in manga but they expanded that story

2021-05-29 19:33:42 +0000 UTCVegapunk was mentioned by kuma. He build the pacifista. Also you have already seen Franky running on different drinks in Enies Lobby. :)

2021-05-29 18:54:23 +0000 UTCDidn't know it was anime only it fits very well into the story. Guess Oda did something and told them what to do. Also that old dude redressed Nami while she was unconscious.
Nanach
2021-05-29 18:50:49 +0000 UTCThese episodes were the cover stories in the manga. they weren't elaborated on in the manga like they are in the anime. so Its canon, but they turned it into full-ish length anime content. thats all the "anime canon" here is. Also a lot of the Boa-Luffy stuff is manga canon too.
Alice Lapin
2021-05-29 18:43:43 +0000 UTCIt’s freaking canon, I don’t know why people want to say is filler, it happens in the cover stories but it all happens
Camila
2021-05-29 18:26:45 +0000 UTCThe island where Sanji landed is full of transgenders
2021-05-29 17:55:24 +0000 UTCBasically with the content in these episodes they were briefly touched on in the manga in between arcs and on the cover stories but the anime just took the material and expanded upon it with Oda's input. We see the gist of WHERE the Strawhats are and who they're with but the anime goes into more detail. Also since you mention the designs changing this is the point the show's character designer changed from Noboru Koizumi to Kazuya Hisada. Hisada has been an animation director since Episode 1 but he got promoted around Saobody and officially took over around this point.

2021-05-29 17:45:18 +0000 UTCI read somewhere that oda did cry when he drew the merry funeral scene
omi2108
2021-05-29 17:00:43 +0000 UTCIf Oda does not cry while he's writing a sad scene, he rewrites it until it does make him cry. That's what I heard.
Racoko
2021-05-29 16:57:30 +0000 UTCThere are three kinds of covers that Oda does for his chapters. There are beautiful double page colour spreads every 4-5 weeks or so. Then there are covers which are based on fan requests. Those requests have to include a character and an animal (for example Nami playing poker with cats) and then there the cover stories which stretch over multiple chapters and are telling stories that Oda could not fit into the manga itself, but can be really important to understand future events better. I think this is a great way to tell even more and it helps the world building so much.

2021-05-29 16:57:22 +0000 UTCits canon but cover stroy

2021-05-29 16:53:08 +0000 UTCJust finished the video! Yes, Oda has cried drawing One Piece. He’s said that he started crying drawing Robin say “I want to live” and had to take a break for a couple minutes before he started drawing again. That’s how you know the writing is amazing 🤩

2021-05-29 16:51:56 +0000 UTCIn my understanding anime canon is manga filler basically
Sarah Trow
2021-05-29 16:46:51 +0000 UTCanime canon is sort of filling in gaps left from the manga or adding more depth
NrageQuit
2021-05-29 16:31:42 +0000 UTCVegapunk is the guy who modified Kuma into a cyborg and created the pacifistas (Kumas clones)
2021-05-29 16:20:54 +0000 UTCExactly as Rikin Patel says. This is "anime canon" which means that we are shown the locations of the strawhats in the manga, but with little detail. In the anime they give more attention to these individual locations. So the anime is just building a little bit on the "cover stories" that the manga gives us, but they don't go as far as introducing anything that isn't shown og said in the manga
2021-05-29 16:20:29 +0000 UTCDamn a multiple drop so many days later! Ruff you are the best
omi2108
2021-05-29 16:14:47 +0000 UTCFun fact! These parts are semi-canon in the manga. Oda shows the whereabouts of the Straw Hats in the cover of each chapter (called cover stories). The anime expanded upon them and honesty added a lot of good stuff! It shows and links the missing Straw Hats well :)
