The Oni Giri attack most definitely a joke about riceballs. In one of the later openings (We Go) they even hide a joke image behind each strawhat while showing them and Zoro's is a riceball.

In the manga by Oda, the cover pages to each chapter show what's happening in the world while the Strawhats go on their adventure. This and the next episode takes cover pages that have to do with Coby and Helmeppo and show us, because it's going to be relevant later. The best time to do this is before the next story arc

Zoro's signature Oni Giri attack literally means "Ogre Cutter" but I suspected for a long time that they're a tribute to the onigiri that the girl gave him when he was tied up. The rice ball pun might be head-canon but I love it! Zoro's a sweet guy deep down.
