12/8 Weekly Roundup Post

Here's the chapters posted this week:

Radical Time Travelers
Chapter 157
Chapter 158
Chapter 159

Cool Time Travelers
Chapter 147
Chapter 148
Chapter 149

Also, a pair of questions for this week, though it's too broad for a poll:
1. Which secondary characters feel like they have the most depth to them?
2. Which secondary characters do you want to see more of?

2. EVERAD THE STEADFAST

1. I would say Jei, although that might just be due to how much Mirian has interacted with them in the story. 2. Honestly there's a ton who have popped up for a bit and then drifted away as Mirian's goals have changed that I would love to see given more attention, if I had to chose one it would be Beatrice although I'm not sure why. It might also be interesting to see Mirian spend a few loops with someone proficient in artifice or some other craft she needs to improve in. I quite enjoyed those chapters early on when she was improving at making spell rods.

Nevermind reading further reminded me that the point of the experiment was to find how to stop that movement not confirm it happens.

I just reread chapter 135. In it Mirian mention how some mervites move though the fourth spatial dimension but if this is already known why does she need to run an experiment to prove it later?

I just like Jei, the awkward straightforwardness while having to deal with people treating her as uncivilised ... who can't even understand what she is working on ... And I'd like to see more of troytin. I want to see more confrontation between the time travelers, it just spices the constant repetition and increases the stakes. And what better rival than a fanatic driven mad by the unending time loop, death and twisted ideas. While I totally agree that a clean final strike would be Miriam smartest action, but ... maybe sometimes she is not the only one making leaps in progress ... maybe troytin manages something she can't ignore and has to prevent him from having/using ... maybe he actually manages to use the artifact under the academy... maybe he does some crazy things with it ... maybe he just repeatedly blows up the entire continent just so he gets more time and torture the other time travelers ... maybe ... (I'm just mind storming, but i also kinda want to see the world burn ;D)

1. I would say the characters that feel they have the most depth to them are the ones that seem to have an extensive backstory with a lot of unique events in it - Rostal from the other comment is a good example. Ibrahim also managed to receive quite a bit of characterization without ever being encountered, and I hope that when we finally get to see him directly this will continue. More generally on the idea of "depth", one of the more interesting aspects of the story for me is how often depth is actually taken away from characters over the course of the story - many characters start out seeming somewhat mysterious or complex, and over time Mirian learns to easily manipulate them like puppets for her goals. This ties together wonderfully with the mental struggles that Mirian is undergoing - as characters continue to respond predictably to actions from Mirian, they become more and more like tools instead of complex human beings, which perfectly reflects Mirian's internal monologue. 2. In terms of individual characters, Xipuatl was a good character in the early chapters and I hope we will get to see more of him at some point. Specter was also very cool and (despite this being a very necessary move from Mirian) I'm saddened to see her die at the beginning of every cycle. I would also be interested in seeing more character archetypes within the conspiracy to have Akana Praediar annex Baracuel - all Baracueli characters I can think of on top of my head essentially have the dual motive of a selfish "this gives me money / power" and "this is the best for Baracuel since Akana Praediar is so strong" which seems to almost always be framed as an excuse. I might be missing a character or two, but more characters with more unique reasons to be in the conspiracy could help - a desire for revenge against some target they believe will come out of the conspiracy, true and honest patriotism as the main motive etc. I believe that would add more depth to the conspiracy as a whole and add more interesting angles of attack for Mirian to exploit and break the conspiracy.

Rostal to both. He is interesting because let's be honest, a lot of secondary characters are students with little life experience, most others are only there for a couple chapters or already explored like Jei or Nicolas. Rostal feels like he's been places and done things; he has definite views on the world, which he shared, but his life is mostly mystery. Surely he didn't master all those forms by only helping Ibrahim in his youth and then meditating his whole life? There must be exciting things he can share if only Mirian will pry. That said, we still don't know motivation and inner workings for a lot of characters. Like, we've been with Beatrice for a bit, but her dreams or life didn't come up. I'd be happy to read about any of them.

1. is hard to say. The thing I like the most about the story is how she interacts with different groups at different times going back and forth. It prevents things from getting to tied down. 2. For the same reason, there isn't necessarily a character I want to see more of, more that it's fun when returns to them so much stronger/prepared then she last did. I'm looking forward to hopefully some rematches with the Akanans when she gets rid of Troytin.
