Heres what i see having happened

There was a cadet being mercilessly bullied by these 2

And Prompto made a report and it did nothing other than make them sneakier and more aggressive because they thought she had

And she was at the end of her rope and maybe Prompto tried to apologise to her for reporting and making it worse

and realised just how close she was to the edge

So he was like

'Say one thing, give me a reason'

And they made a remark during training, rude but not terrible without context and he was ON THEM

Slapped the guy so hard he landed on his ass on the ground

And then when the friend was like 'what the fuck Argentum?' 

He got it on the way back

then threw himself on them

And Cor is like 'what on EOS?'

And has to pull Prompto off them
