It's been going on for months so who knew when that was going to be. Maybe they even planned to ask him to join them but he's so hurt by it all that he automatically turns them down.
Or the alternate - no one realises but suddenly Prompto becomes awkward and avoidant around them. Maybe he gives them a few openings to tell him and they don't every time.
All the angst until eventually it matches up with the other and they ask him to join and he declines out of hurt.
Eventually they'll make it up to him
