His son hates him for this decision, but he has to make it, as King. As a father, he has to put Noctis first, and as King, he has to put his kingdom first. Those two correlate to doing what is best for Noct's reign, and he's trying to protect his son from the inevitable scandal it would cause. But Regis is such a kind individual, I am not looking forward to his (and many others') reactions when the truth comes out.

Also how torn up Regis is about this already...he is gonna feel even worse when teh full circumstances come to light...I just feel so bad for everyone involved. Like, Ignis and Regis and all really do have Noct and the country's interests in mind...it just sucks for Prom that that doesn't align for him T.T
