Color is in! And speaking of color, I have something dumb to talk about.
So what color is the shell of Hornet and Ghost? White right? In the game sprites thats the case, in fact most characters have a white shell/mask. So thats that, just leave them white when I color it. But theres more to it. In item descriptions and dialogues, it is noted that Ghost's shell is particularly pale. This kind of thing can also be seen with other items like the pale flowers that you get from the lost lover. This is because of their connection to the pale king, and I thought it would be a great detail to include. Obviously Hornet is a daughter of the pale king, so Hornet and Ghost have a slightly different shade compared to everyone else, who is a little more grey or pink. (You might be able to notice the difference in Quirrel's mask and the dreamer's mask, which uses the same white I use for hornet.
So Hornet and Ghost use a pure white while other characters without connection to the pale king use off colored whites right? Well theres one more thing to add. You see shading white objects can be weird. Just using grey can give it an uninteresting lifeless look. So for the base color, I actually use a blue/cyan tinted white for Ghost and Hornet. This means I can use a pure white as a highlight and then the blue will act as natural shading and give it a cool silver look.
I talk about all this because i needed to make a decision on what color I wanted Quirrel's mask to be. He has no formal connection to the pale king, so it wouldn't be the same as Ghost or Hornet. I tried an off pink but that didn't work. Then I tried a green tint that I hoped would give him a rustic look, but that didn't fit either. In the end I just made it grey, something I would otherwise avoid because of what I mentioned above, but I think it works in his case. In my interpretation of his character, he is mostly a normal bug. No real special title or bloodline. Everything that makes him special is something he got on his own merits, not any sort of destiny. So a grey mask sort of captures that feel.
Anyway, thank you if you read all this. Please comment if you have any questions!
