I understand your meaning well. but I can't agree all your opinion. There is no right answer because each artist has a different tendency and growth background. anyway.. I think that you can alternate options, because it is very important that the artist draws what is interesting to HIM.

Maye a mix of both. Like a curated list from you that we would vote on. "I realized that the popularity of the artist has nothing to do with the character of the work." I can't speak for everyone but I'm here to see your artwork no matter who the character that's being drawn. However, it is nice to see a wide variety of characters. I like having a small say in what's being drawn but I think the artist should put more weight on the final decision.

its the style i like not the subject of your painting. Of course a familiar subject would be more kind. i think those artists who totally according to the pop poll have a common feature, they all have the very quick hand to finish several paintings, so they can catch the pop feet even make out some time to draw what they want. So i think you can still open the pop poll but only use it to open your idea or catch some infomations. And finally draw what you want❤

I never liked popular characters because lots of artists chose to draw them and I can see lots of versions of them, from the other hand every artists drawing style can be different which can make a popular character look very nice, so I dunno really, so I would say create artworks which makes you happy.

Do both. Like one month we decide the Characters the other decides you. So its refreshing what characters are comming and still the popular ones getting their turn.

I think you should try both ways out, maybe a combo where you do 1 piece one way and a couple the other. But really it's your patreon, we're here for your art, if you think a way works best for you do it that way. I would ask some other patreon artist's opinions if you're unsure.

Do what suits you but it make a poll to narrow your choices then ultimate choice should be yours. And if you have a character you wanna do then no poll. Just go ahead and do it

And maybe you could provide a space monthly for character suggestions for like 48 hours and you choose the 3 you liked the most regardless of popularity, and add 3 chosen by you and make the poll with those. Or if you prefer to choose them all it's fine as long as there is variety to choose from.
