Angel Painting Process

It's interesting that you start with a blob of clay almost and mold it with light and dark, subtracting and adding until you have what you want. Do you feel it's easier to paint this way rather than starting with a sketch? Did you used to begin with a sketch but then swap to this method because you found it to be easier?
