Four Ways of Playing a Jazz 2.5.1 | Rhythm Guitar Lesson | Key of C

Hello friends,

And welcome to another rhythm guitar lesson. In today's session we will be branching out into the Jazz genre, and learning four ways of playing it's most common chord progression, the 2.5.1. We will begin by learning the beginner version in the open position (first three frets), and then move on to practicing traditional jazz chord shapes up and down the fretboard. Let's get started!

Clear and helpful...very useful.

Thanks Rob! Finally got a night off, and really getting these shapes down. Great to play these Jazz chords in different positions, besides only the basic open position. So cool. I found your channel a few weeks ago and it changed something. Most teachers don't really explain the theory behind it. I felt like I was stuck at the same level for too long. Your lessons are really approachable and make learning theory fun! Feel like I'm making a lot of progress since I started following you :). 2.5.1 sounds so wonderful by the way, it makes me feel all warm inside haha :)

Hi Rob, when you strum on the G dominant 7 chord are you muting the C note on the A string?

Spot on Rob thanks ... So this weekend I'll be mostly playing Jaazzzz ....mmm nice ;-)

I agree John, it can be a bit intimidating. One good thing is that the shapes are all movable, so you learn one and boom, you've got them in every key. That's the best thing about the guitar.

So glad you're excited to get these chord shapes down. Almost every jazz tune has a 2.5.1 in there some where, so this is a big step in understanding the genre.

That's a fantastic goal to have Dawn. Jazz has never been my main focus, but learning many of the fundamentals has definitely made me a stronger and more interesting guitarist. I'll have a follow up very soon!

Rob, Thanks for the great lesson! It is a little daunting learning jazz because of the large number of chords.

great lesson!! just finished watching it. It's 1am here, so can't play now or i'll wake people up. Cant wait to try this first thing tomorrow!!

The sound of these jazz chords is just delicious. Thanks for all the insights about them, especially the fact that they are moveable. Getting more comfortable playing up the neck is a goal of mine.
