In this tutorial I’ll break down two simple, yet professional sounding blues licks that demonstrate the “call and response”technique. This is often described as a musical conversation, usually between two instruments, where musician A performs a lick, which is then completed by musician B. Very often these two licks might be similar in structure, but the most important element in call and response is that the second lick agrees with the context provided by the first. Let’s get started!
