Chuck Berry "Johnny B. Goode" Complete Guitar Lesson

Hello friends,
Thank you so much for your patience this week! I've been working toward producing one of my most ambitious guitar lessons to date; a complete breakdown of Chuck Berry's 1958 classic "Johnny B. Good." It took several hours of listening in slo-mo and practicing to get these licks as true as possible, and I think I've gotten pretty close. We'll begin this session by learning the rhythm guitar elements and the theory behind this tune. Once we have learned to shuffle like Chuck, we'll move on to learning the chorus licks, solos. Let's get started!

Bar 5 I found it more convenient to have 8 on D-string instead of 3 on G-string and empty G-string instead of 5 on D-string. This way you don't have to move your left hand too much. Also replacing the 7\5 slide with a 7P6\5 to keep the hand always in the same position.

Fantastic and so clearly explained, thank you!

Thanks for putting this together! Absolutely fantastic song and you broke it down masterfully.

This is great man, Back to the future got me into guitar and i'm finally learning this song the right way. Very nostalgic. :)

Cool !

Forget it. Found it. Doh!

This lesson is awesome! Thanks! Can anyone direct me to the tabs for this song? I'd appreciate it.

Hello Rob, best Chuck Berry lesson I've seen online, congrats on it. Lovely playing and singing as well. My question is, how far should we force using downstrokes on this song. Like with the lick that starts at 1.12 and the one around 1.33 . Particularly with the latter, do you play exclusively downstrokes there? Is it technically possible to do, sequentially and repetetively downstriking first and second strings so fast? Does it matter? You can tell I am suffering some degree of OCD, but well I like it what do you do.. Thanks in advance.

Hey Rob, I have to tell you, every time I get an email from you I smile and think, oh boy, Rob has finished another lesson. It makes me feel good inside because there is no telling what the lesson is about or what song it might be. You've got a great eclectic mix of lessons and tutorials, that what totally sets you apart from everyone else. Thanks Rob, you are the best!

Thanks Alex, this is one of my favorites as well, so much fun to play and teach!

Excellent lesson of all time favorite !!

Hey Joe, thanks so much for supporting, I look forward to helping you reach your goals! If you're downloading the tabs on desktop, it's best to use google chrome as your browser, and also make sure that your security settings allow for it. There is a very robust help section available, I'm sure you will find the answer there. Keep me posted. If you have further issues, I'll help you trouble shoot when I get back to my studio. Thanks again!

Just joined as a contributor but can't seem to download tabs!

Hey Vincenzo, thanks so much for your support. Mobile links are at the bottom of each post. I'm reaching out to Patreon tomorrow to let them know about that issue. Until the update, you can always find the links in grey text below the post.

Can not open link to tabs, I am using a iPad tablet, does that matter?
