The older actors were cast first so they used pictures of them as teens to cast the younger versions.

2024-06-04 00:02:44 +0000 UTCJust for fun, if you ever look at Milly Alcock (Young Rhaenyra) and Emma D'Arcy (Adult Rhaenyra) when they were both younger, they do look eerily similar. The casting nailed the younger counterparts of the new actors, even though Adult Rhaenyra is now supposed to look the part... A mother, heir to the throne, etc, and no longer "The Realm's Delight" as she was when she was younger.

If you read the book you'll know that the main story begins when the characters are older but there are also many important stuff you need to know about their childhood. It would be impossible to have an entire season of the young characters, there would be a lot of filler episodes. I think this is the best approach to tell the story of the dance of dragons.
