Welcome Bunny

When you arrive at the slumber party Ms.O and I will greet you at the door. Someone will offer you a drink, and you will be led to the parlour. When all of the guests have arrived we’ll have an opening circle, which consists of introductions and a reminder of the rules for the evening. Starting the night this way contributes heavily to our consent-forward event, and gives us the sense that we’re on a journey together. We’ve been introduced, and we’ve agreed to the terms; now let’s play.

I thought I was clever taking an edible as everyone arrived, assuming it would kick in once my introductory speech was finished and the party was starting. Everyone is so good about arriving on time, and there was only one new person attending, I really didn’t give it much more thought.

But then the new girl was an hour late. And she had a really good reason. And we usually wouldn’t have been able to wait, but since it was a room full of slumber party veterans who were happy to catch up with each other, they all voted with their big empathetic hearts that we could wait. It made me giggle that the babes were tittering about how anxiety provoking it would be to walk in late as the only new person, there was adorable strategizing for how to make them feel comfortable when they arrived . I love my girl gang.

But my timing was not ideal.

The one hour delay meant that I had to start my little introductory spiel just as the edible was kicking my ass. I clutched my phone and tried to get my eyes to focus on my Notes app bullet-point list of rules and welcomes. I started off strong but as I went through these usually jovial points, my mouth became impossibly dry and I lost the plot. I couldn’t find my place in my Notes app list, it all looked unfamiliar. Everyone was staring at me expectantly as I got the giggles and tried to make a very important point about “seizing the moment” and being brave because the opportunity was here. But what came out was me dramatically exclaiming that we had to be courageous because we ONLY HAVE TONIGHT!!!!! After which I crumpled over on the pillow next to me laughing so hard tears were streaming down my face because WHAT THE FUCK WAS I TALKING ABOUT?

I think it was Piper who asked if that meant I was planning on killing everyone. I replied, through tears, that I had mismanaged my edible and was just way too high for this. Once again, my girl gang had my back and carried on with the necessary steps of introductions while I regained my composure. We went around the circle with guests introducing themselves and sharing their intentions for the night. Piper took notes on her clipboard. So many sweet and vulgar goals were shared. By the time it came back around to me I was ready to say the magic words that get our night truly started; “CHEERS QUEERS!”

(Followed by Ms.O’s frantic reminder that I forgot to give out lootbags 🫣 which we remedied immediately. The important lesson here is that we can navigate all sorts of unexpected circumstances. It truly takes a village. 🙏)
