Can I tell you something really cute? It was Friday night, we were just settling in, catching up with babes as they arrived. The discussion turned to the curse of heteronormativity, and being a feminine woman who can’t tell when women are flirting with her.

It makes sense, especially for those of us who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. There was no main-stream sapphic representation to look to or learn from. It always looked the same; we grew up seeing the script play out between women and men, movies and tv commercials showed us how to do it. It felt easier to notice when men flirted with you, like we knew the rules to follow to identify it, and engage with it. Yet when a beautiful woman bats her eyes at us and compliments our nails we’re more likely to think she’s “just being friendly”, or worse, we freeze because we aren’t sure what comes next.

As the conversation rounded off Ms.O, who’d recently visited Piper in New York while on a work trip, smirked. She shot Piper a cheeky look and made a comment just the two of them understood. Something along the lines of “yeah, like when you ask a beautiful woman what she’s doing after this and….”

I suppose that evening O had made a move, and Piper assumed she was just being nice. And while the rest of us moved on to the dining room moments later to pig out on pizza and garlic fingers, the two of them stayed put on the couch and made up for the lost opportunity.

And we were all pretty glad for that.

This is just to remind you that it’s never too late to clarify your intentions, or make sure you were *ahem* understood.
