Frostbite
Added 2023-12-14 20:44:49 +0000 UTCHe asked me yesterday
“Is frostbite reversible?”
It took me a second to stop the roaring in my brain and calmly reply
“No. The damage is permanent.”
He was looking in the mirror, close up so he could see his skin. He said his cheeks hurt now every time it’s cold.
This is what happens when live tissue is damaged, the circulation suffers, the ache when the air is cold. It’s confusing to a man who has never had to face consequences. His parents protected him with their wealth and status, I protected him with my fix-it attitude, getting ahead of his worst habits, swinging my axe like a lumberjack. Keeping us warm.
This is what has happened in our relationship, the live tissue has been damaged. Our circulation has suffered. There is ache and cold. It’s confusing to a man who has never had to face consequences.
I don’t think he’s really noticed yet. If it’s anything like the skin on his face, it’ll take a few years before he realizes what he’s done
realizes it’s permanent.

Sadly, letting people suffer the consequences of their own actions is difficult.
