If I’d had a support system of strong queer women then (like I do now) my whole life would be different.

I had nobody to reflect what was happening to me, nobody to refer to patriarchy and structures of power I couldn’t see. Nobody to help me see the machine that was working in my life. The ways I was following in the footsteps of my Mother, even though I insisted it was the last thing I was doing. I didn’t see it.

My middle-schooler had their birthday party this week. My child is non-binary and very gay, most of their friends are baby queers in one way or another. My house filled with them and their rowdy unbridled excitement filled my heart. They do not have to wait to find their people. The world is wide and their people are everywhere.

My big life changes, my stability, my healing and my triumph have all been possible because I am surrounded now by my own gang of brilliant, bright, beautiful women. People who see me, love me, support me when I can’t see myself. People who can look at the darkness and say “you are right, this is not okay, you deserve better.” People who can look at the light and say “it’s coming from you.”

It’s changed my whole life. I am so grateful for this.
