It’s my weekend at home so we decorated the tree and put up rainbow lights. It was a good day, happy faces and all that nostalgia.
I still have ornaments I made in kindergarten, some of them have little burn holes on the back from where they touched up against the lights on my parents tree back then, you know the old string lights before LED’s that got hot to the touch? It made me anxious when I was a kid, I would stay awake on Christmas not because of Santa excitement, but because I was certain the tree would ignite and all the presents and heirlooms would burn and everything would be ruined and scary and sad. The little burn spots were like proof it was bound to happen. Now they’re like evidence that I survived that house and all of the chaos within. And everything in my house now is safe and thoughtful. And I’ll sleep soundly on Christmas Eve.
