A few more weeks and he’ll be released in my back yard. He’s decided all humans are scary except me, which is pretty cute. Now I get all of the kisses and little hand-holds. Soon he won’t want me holding him back either. He’s busy trying to use his instincts these days. I put “outside things” in his cage for enrichment, maple keys, leaves, pieces of flowers, herbs and soil. When I was cleaning out his cage the other day in his sleeping box I found a pine cone, 4 sticks, and a piece of paper towel. A mighty fine attempt at a first nest from an excellent boy.
(Don’t worry, we’ve followed the wildlife centre’s advice and my husband built him a predator-safe box so he’ll have a proper nest until he brushes up on his squirrel skills. They also advised that we feed him through the winter since he hasn’t had the chance to caché food, which is great because I know all of his favourites so I can spoil him.)
