He tried so hard to pretend he doesn't care and that he was above these "disgusting" spawn" that he helped create,, and all he could focus on to not mentally break, was to kill Cazador. He didn't want his true feelings affecting him. 2:11:54 - so interesting that here Astarion is repulsed by the thought of "luring" the kids. It was not his fault and there was nothing so gross and seedy about it. Then after, when he releases the spawn he admits it...though the line delivery of Neil makes him take a breath and almost choke on the sentence of "they shouldn't have to suffer because I.....lured...them here" admitting what he did. Also in the first instance, he says he felt nothing when he handed the kids over to Cazador. He was so broken at that point, he had completely created a character of himself to block his feelings away. I'm friends with Stephen Rooney, who wrote Astarion, and he said he was so lucky to work with Neil Newbon, who just brought the character to life. Stephen and Neil just knocked it out of the park with his character
