I will say I also found it compelling viewing maybe because it is so contrary to my personal experiences, expectations and preferences. These characters seem to occupy a different universe, with different rules. No one has forced Yo into his role, so one can’t comfortably get on a moral high horse or root for his emancipation. At the same time, he does seem confused about what he wants from this relationship. Segasaki is also hard to read. On the surface at least, he seems to be enjoying having Yo as his house slave and controlling & using him as he pleases. There are hints that affection may also be there but we are left to wonder why he acts coldly and doesn’t communicate if he has feelings for Yo. Is this merely a hot mess involving two lusty but dysfunctional personalities or is it something deeper?

I am aware of the genre since it was a precursor to BL’s but it’s not something I ever read or watched (the closest thing I’ve seen to this genre is TharnType).

There's definitely some overlap with BDSM, but they're not really interchangeable labels. At the beginning there's lots of negotiating consent and there was always a written contract (it was DC...so many lawyers!) and there was always a specific length the contract was for and it could be terminated. Mostly, it was older dominant guys looking for young subs who wanted to be provided for...like in this story. Yes, sex is involved, but it's not really the main thing...it's all about control. Feel free to ask if you've got any questions and I'll try to help.

One person is fascinated by/obsessed with the other. It can look completely one sided initially, but they always tell a compelling story. Cherry Magic has this idolisation narrative too, but very different. Japan will take you on a rollercoaster ride. Also, this is a show that’s better on the second watch, after you understand everything In episode 1 he actually says tomorrow’s weather “is perfect for laundry”. The rewatch value of this one & shows like My Beautiful Man (also Japan) & Secret Relationships (Korea) is top notch

I think japanese BL, alot of times, show different and unique dynamics. This is why I love seriers like my personal weatherman or my beautiful man. You are getting to know a new world, where the couple you are watching are the one setting the standards. It is, like you said, very intriguing. The shows don’t follow a formula. If you compare innocent wholesome show like old fashion cupcake or at our dinner table or i hear sunspot you will find that they are different from each other as well. By the way we can tell you where things fall if you don’t consider it a spoiler? Like a problematic/wholesome scale. Haha

No matter who I’ve watched it with, or which poor, unsuspecting reactor I’ve seen dive in, it’s always the same: confusion, a dash of disbelief, and that 😒 face. Fabi had no idea what was going on in episode one, and honestly? That’s tradition. If you’re not at least mildly concerned for your sanity by the end of the first episode, are you even watching Japanese BL? Japan has this wild talent for taking literally anything and making it oddly wholesome, cutesy, and somehow addictive. All I’m gonna say is: let them cook, Fabi. They’re making a big pot of curry, and it’s gonna be nom-nom delicious.

It´s funny and cute. I love J-BL. Every one of them have something special. I used to expect anything, ´cause my mind usually go with "oh, what´s going on? what did he say? what was that mean? is it weird or cute - or both?" And I LOVE it. They can show us so much different wibes of relationship, unique and indescribable in "normal" way. I´m addicted to it. Especially to this kind of couples - it feels like imposible relationship, but it works for them. And it can look weird but funny and cute and you keep thinking about it long after it ends. And Fabi... you want to be warned: So one day you start watching My beautiful man - be open for something special and indescribable.

I did enjoy this series as it is different from a lot of stuff out there and yes it’s a bit weird and teeters on the edge of toxic at times but as you said communication is key.
