Reborn as Superman's Son, Ch 47

Chapter 47: Peter Parker: Eden Has It So Rough! I'm Terrible! Eden: Huh?!

"Is this a surprise?"

"More like a shock?!"

"He's always putting pressure on me!"

Eden looked at the postcard and once again found himself amused and exasperated by his invincible father. Well, case closed. His journey to the Marvel universe wasn't due to some struggle between cosmic entities, nor was it his father's "arch-nemesis" playing tricks. All that speculation Eden had been entertaining—about OAA and God playing games with each other and such—could be completely thrown out the window.

It was simply his invincible Superman father Clark Kent, seeing his son idle at home with nowhere to go, getting annoyed and deliberately setting up this super-sized task for him.

"Sigh." Eden clutched the postcard tightly in his hand. His expression shifted from a frown to speechlessness, and finally he looked up at the sky with vacant eyes, on the verge of tears.

All the hardships Eden had suffered in his life were personally fed to him, spoonful by spoonful, by his own father!

"I miss the coffee Donald used to make for me," Eden murmured to himself. Life was too bitter—he preferred sweet drinks with sugar and milk.

"Grumble grumble." At that moment, the Flerken's stomach made a rumbling sound, and its eyes gradually took on a dangerous glint.

"Huh?!" Seeing this, Eden's heart filled with an ominous premonition.

"I need to fill this cat's stomach first." With that said, Eden held the fat orange cat in his arms and headed downstairs to the buffet restaurant for a satisfying meal.

Buffet owner: "Oh no, it's coming for me!"

Meanwhile.

Little Spider was swinging through the New York City skies. After beating up several members of the Menagerie, he hummed a little tune and returned home.

"Peter, are you back?!" As soon as Peter got home, he saw Aunt May entertaining a distinguished guest in a suit.

"Aunt May, who is this?" Peter looked at Aunt May with some confusion and asked.

"This is Mr. Phil Coulson, a senior manager at Stark Industries. He's here to discuss a sponsorship with us." Aunt May called Peter over and introduced Coulson.

"Stark Industries?! That famous Tony Stark's company?" Peter Parker immediately became somewhat nervous.

Honestly, Peter couldn't understand why Stark Industries would take notice of him and want to invest in him. Aside from his excellent academic performance at school, he deliberately kept a low profile in all other areas.

"You're Peter Parker?"

"Indeed, just as the rumors said—a good kid."

"My name is Phil Coulson. You can call me Phil."

"I'm here to discuss a deal with you." Coulson smiled at Peter Parker. He could tell at a glance that this child was, just as Eden had described, genuinely kind and pure.

"Hello, Mr. Coulson." Peter sat down in front of Coulson, nodding gently.

"Hehe, don't be nervous, kid. First, take a look at this agreement. The conditions aren't too harsh—as long as you can successfully get into college, graduate, and then work for Stark Industries for five years, you'll receive our sponsorship. Kid, you'll need money for college, right?"

Coulson smiled as he pushed the agreement in front of Peter.

"Um. The conditions really aren't that harsh. May I ask how much you're willing to sponsor me and my aunt?" Peter looked at the agreement before him. After reading through it sentence by sentence, he nodded, then looked up at Coulson and asked.

As Coulson said, if he planned to go to college, he would need a large sum of money for tuition. If he couldn't find any sponsor before getting into college, he would need to apply for student loans.

"A total of one million dollars," Coulson said with a smile.

"How much?" Peter's eyes widened. He thought he'd misheard and looked at Coulson incredulously.

"A total of one million dollars, kid. But this isn't exactly a sponsorship—theoretically speaking, it's also a loan. However, if you meet the conditions, you won't need to repay it," Coulson said with a smile.

"That's too much! That exceeds my value. I mean, this is very unusual." Peter Parker's head shook like a rattle. He'd thought it would be fifty thousand dollars at most.

"No, kid. Please trust me—you're worth this money." Coulson first calmed Peter Parker's emotions, then said with a smile, "I can see you need some time to think this over. When you've made up your mind, remember to call me."

"May, it's getting late. I should head back now." Coulson stood up and winked at Peter Parker's aunt.

"Oh my. Mr. Coulson actually called my aunt 'May.'" Peter's eyes widened. He was beginning to notice something odd about this situation.

"Alright, Mr. Coulson. Please do come visit often," Aunt May said with a smile as she escorted Coulson out of the living room.

Not only that, Aunt May and Coulson chatted for a while at the Parkers' doorway. The two seemed to have a good impression of each other.

"Damn it. Did Mr. Coulson really apply for such a huge scholarship amount because he values me?" Peter Parker took in the entire scene. He suddenly felt everything was starting to make sense.

Although Peter Parker felt his own charm was average with no particularly outstanding qualities, he had to admit that his Aunt May was indeed a very charming beauty.

The next day.

At school.

"Hmm?! That's really strange." Eden looked at Peter who seemed preoccupied with something and frowned, thinking, "Could that old bastard Nick Fury dare to embezzle my money? Did that one million dollars not make it to the Parker family's bank account?"

"What's wrong, Peter?" Eden thought this as he sat down next to Peter Parker and asked, "You look worried about something. Are you having some difficulty? To be honest, I've made quite a bit of money from my part-time work lately. If you need it, I can sponsor you."

"Eden." After hearing Eden's words, Peter was so moved he almost cried.

From Peter's perspective, Eden—an "orphan" who barely got by on part-time work—was offering to sponsor him, a poor kid living with his aunt.

"No, Eden. It's not about money," Peter shook his head repeatedly.

"Then it's because..." Eden was somewhat puzzled.

"I'll tell you the truth, Eden. But please don't tell anyone else, I beg you." Peter pleaded with Eden.

"You know, Peter, I absolutely won't tell anyone else. Because in this school, besides you, I don't have any other friends," Eden said bluntly.

"Um. Sorry, Eden. I've hurt you again. Why do I have this damn mouth?!" Peter cringed. He kept putting his foot in his mouth, always stabbing people—stabbing his best friend especially.

"Um, it's fine, we're bros." Eden shook his head.

"Actually, I suspect a senior manager from Stark Industries has taken a liking to my aunt," Peter Parker said quietly.

"That's a good thing. Aunt May is indeed very charming." Eden nodded. He didn't think there was anything wrong with this. After all, Aunt May in this timeline was indeed very beautiful and young.

Of course, to reasonably explain to Peter Parker why he'd seen Aunt May before, Eden added, "I once saw Aunt May at a parent-teacher conference. She left a very deep impression on me."

"I'm really sorry, Eden." But Eden's innocent explanation sounded to Peter Parker like: everyone else had parents come to parent-teacher conferences, while Eden, an "orphan," had to attend his own parent-teacher conference by himself.

Peter's conscience was being riddled with holes by Eden's words, one after another.

"Maybe I should accept that money and convince Aunt May to adopt Eden. Anyway, that money is way too much for our family—we could never use it all." Peter Parker thought this way.

On Eden's side, the System's notification sounds kept ringing in his brain.

"..." Eden was silent about this.

"If it's true, that would of course be a good thing. I'd be happy for my aunt too. But Eden, this is very unusual, you know?! In your opinion, would a senior manager from Stark Industries really spend one million dollars pursuing my aunt?!" Peter Parker rambled to Eden.

"One million dollars?" Eden frowned. Eden seemed to catch on.

"Yes, a full one million dollars! Don't you find it unbelievable too? I knew it—I can't accept that money." Little Spider seemed to have made a decision.

"What's the name of that Stark Industries executive?" Eden interjected with a question.

"Phil Coulson," Peter answered directly without much thought.

"Damn it." Eden was amused and exasperated by Nick Fury's methods.

So in Nick Fury's view, the reasonable way to give this one million dollars to the Parker family was to have Agent Coulson pursue Peter's aunt?!

This was worse than just arranging for Peter Parker or Aunt May to win the lottery.

Nick Fury: "That requires paying taxes, kid! A lot of taxes!"

Nick Fury—America's top embezzler and the Tax Bureau's lifelong enemy—explained: "I originally wanted to give it directly to Peter as a student loan, then find a way to help Peter pay back the money, thus legally avoiding taxes. But I was afraid Peter, being such a good kid, wouldn't dare take out a loan."
