A Girlfriend in the Making (2/2)

Evan—or rather, Evie—fidgeted nervously as Marcus held the door to the mini-golf course open for her. The black skater dress Jenna had insisted on felt like it clung to her every move, the flare of the skirt swishing around her smooth legs. The makeup, the glossy nails, the tiny silver earrings—everything about her screamed femininity. She tried to ignore the way Marcus’s eyes lingered just a little too long as he smiled at her.

“You ready to show me your skills?” Marcus teased, holding up a bright pink golf ball and offering it to her.

Evie forced a smile, taking the ball and twirling it awkwardly between her manicured fingers. “I’m, uh, not very good at this,” she admitted, her voice softer than usual. She focused on keeping it light and girly, silently praying Marcus wouldn’t notice anything off.

“That’s okay,” Marcus said with an easy grin. “I’ll show you.”

The first few holes were harmless—Evie’s clumsy putting had Marcus chuckling, and he seemed to enjoy her growing frustration with the game. But when they reached a tricky hole, Marcus stepped closer behind her.

“Here, let me help you,” he offered, gently placing his hands over hers to guide her grip. His chest brushed her back, his voice a low murmur in her ear. “Just a little more to the left…”

Evie’s heart raced. She could feel the warmth of him, his breath tickling her neck. For a moment, she forgot about the dress, the makeup, the act—it almost felt real. Together, they tapped the ball, and it rolled smoothly into the hole with a satisfying clink.

“Perfect,” Marcus said, smiling warmly as he pulled back. For a brief second, Evie caught herself smiling back.

The rest of the date blurred by in a mix of casual jokes, easy conversation, and Marcus’s occasional praise for the rare moments she actually made a decent shot. By the time they reached the final hole, Evie’s cheeks felt permanently warm.

When Marcus’s car pulled up in front of her house, he leaned across the console with a soft smile. “I’d love to do this again sometime, Evie,” he said, brushing a kiss on her cheek before she could even stammer a response.

Blushing furiously, she slipped out of the car and quietly opened the door, hoping to sneak in unnoticed.

“So…” Jenna’s voice rang out, making Evie jump. She was sprawled on the couch, smirking. “How’d the date go, little sis?”

“It was… awful!” Evie blurted, her voice trembling as she rushed past her. She bit her lip, her hands fidgeting at her sides as she tried to escape, her face practically glowing with embarrassment.

Jenna laughed, but she didn’t think much of it at the time. At least, not until two weeks later, when she heard the front door creak open and close just a little too carefully.

Her curiosity piqued, she peeked out the window—and froze. There, standing nervously on the porch, was a petite brunette in a pink off-the-shoulder crop top and a denim miniskirt, paired with sky-high white heels. It took Jenna a moment to register the familiar pouty lips and delicate features beneath the perfectly curled hair.

“Evan?” she whispered to herself, before rushing to the door.

When she swung it open, the girl nearly jumped out of her heels.

“Well, well, Evie,” Jenna said, her grin widening as she leaned against the doorframe, her voice dripping with amusement. “I didn’t think I’d be seeing my little sister again so soon. And looking this cute, too!”

Evie flushed, her hands nervously gripping the tiny clutch bag at her side. “I-I’m just… just going to hang out with Marcus,” she mumbled, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jenna raised an eyebrow, her smirk widening as she looked Evie over. “That’s what you’re wearing to hang out?” she teased, gesturing at the pink off-the-shoulder top, the ‘I ❤️ BF’ boldly displayed across her chest, the tiny denim miniskirt hugging her hips, and the white heels clicking softly against the porch. “Sweetie, that’s not exactly a hang out outfit.”

Evie’s cheeks burned, but before Jenna could say anything else, the sound of tires on the driveway caught her attention. Marcus’s car pulled up, and without a word, Evie clutched her bag and minced down the steps, the click-clack of her heels echoing as she hurried toward the car.

“Have fun on your Date with your Boyfriend, Evie!” Jenna called after her, her voice dripping with playful emphasis.

Evie slipped into Marcus’s car, her face glowing red as he leaned over and greeted her with a soft kiss on the cheek. The car eased down the driveway, and Jenna stayed where she was, arms crossed, watching them go.

With a soft chuckle, she shook her head. “I just wanted to have a little fun,” she murmured. “Didn’t think I’d actually end up with a little sister. And yet… there she goes, sneaking out with her boyfriend.”

Smiling to herself, she turned and headed back inside, the sound of Evie’s heels still echoing in her mind.
