I wonder if you've had a chance to read about what this album is about and the references/inspiration it takes from iconic LGBTQ+ history and ballroom. I know this album isn't for everyone, but the queer community has really rallied behind it, and seeing someone like Beyonce use her platform to bring these topics into the mainstream is legendary. I know its a step in a different direction, and it won't be for everyone, but trying to view it from a different lens might help you grasp some of the different sounds and melodies. I wish she sang more on this album too, but it's definitely a grower. I hope you can revisit it and find the time to dance and have a good time with it! Love you Ajay!!

I'm sure others have stated already but adding my 2 cents. When I first heard "Break My Soul," I thought it was weak but the words were great. So I kept listening and over time, it grew on me. Culturally for Black queer people, this album means a lot. I listened to it on repeat for months and felt empowered. It spoke to the anger and frustration I feel daily that I push down. Beyoncé also mentioned that she tried not to make it too perfect and just enjoy herself. There's an appreciation for ballroom culture here that I love. It's very much a love letter to the Black queer community. Beyoncé and team did their research.

The context for the album, being in a party mood, having no expectations, letting the music move you is all important. I don’t think it’s really a “sit down and listen” kinda album you know? But even as a STAN, it definitely had to grow on me too and I’m so happy it did!

I didn’t like Lemonade when it came out because of the different sounds, but that grew on me. So hopefully, Renaissance can grow on you. This was my favorite album of 2022, but it took me a few listens to get to this level. It's ok if you don't like it, it's MUSIC, not mathematics. Sad you didn't like it but this album feels like it reaches very deep into House, Bounce, Ballroom, 80s club culture, a lot of obscure areas of music! I ended exploring whole genres I never really listen to before & had a whole sentimental convo with my older family members bc they loved how authentic it sounded. But i immersed myself into the story of this album, before it was released, and what's all behind. At the beginning, i felt weird about it. It eventually grew on me quickly. Also, the era will be in 3 parts, so i presume there will be more singing in the next projects. But you're right Plastic off the sofa, and Virgo's Groove are her best vocals songs. PLUS, Plastic Off The Sofa, was co writing with SABRINA CLAUDIO !!!! :) :) Now i really love this album, and i think that only Beyoncé can serve an album as such. Beyoncé doesn't want do to the same things what she did in the past. That's maybe why we (not all, but a lot of people) feel confused at the first listening. Appreciate the honesty opinion. This album is definitely not for everyone or every occasion. When everyone is expecting her to deliver a powerful vocal performance singing about love/family/betrayal, she turned 180 degrees opposite and embrace the chaotic yet beautiful ballroom culture, which is all about celebrating oneself. I had the same feeling on my first listen, it was just too much going on that I got lost immediately and just gave up. And a few days later, I listened to it again while driving, I stopped trying so hard to keep pace with the rhythms and lyrics, trying to digest everything, instead I just moved with the music, let it overwhelm my senses, and it became my favorite album of the year.

Thankfully I didn't see bad comments more than the good ones. Good sis and bros learned from Chromatica as they should.

some of the songs have grown on me due to hearing so much on tik tok, but I am just not a fan of her rapping. her voice is ethereal - and I loved how plastic on the sofa was able to truly showcase her vocals.

Break my soul was a song that was playing during lgbtq+ parade in my small hometown in Poland. 18000 citizens. I will never forget this experience. There was small group of people chanting this lifeless prayers that you'll get in catholic church... And we will scream "you want break my soul" over and over. Sending love. Love . To be fair I didn't like this album the very first time I heard it because it's quite a jarring departure from the Beyonce that we're used to and I do think Break My Soul was overhyped. However, after listening to it again, it grew on me and then grew on me more and more each time. Now I love it and appreciate it for what it is 😅

I kinda figured your reaction to the album would've been the way it was after your reaction to the first few songs. When I initially listened Break My Soul I had the same reaction because it wasn't what I expected at all. However, it definitely grew on me. Seeing how I was hit with a curveball with BMS, when Renaissance was released I thew out all of my prior expectations and listened to it for what it was. On my initial listen I liked Alien Superstar, Energy, Virgos Groove, Move, Heated and Pure/Honey. The album was also released around the time where clubs were opening up etc. so I think that also helped smooth the album over for me aswell. Sidenote: I was definitely dancing throughout the entire video and I wish you were dancing with me too haha!

We stan a honest Queen! And yeah, you could say this album was made for specific people. And yes, i agree with you, most probably(even just probably) it will not grow on you. And it is absolutely ok. A little bit about singing. Yeah, I'm a fan too and she is vocal mastodon, queen, but she is not supposed to just sing all time. I like that she try different styles. She is not a bus or train or plain that has schedules and you know (at least theoretically) when they gonna come and expect it for you to expect anything from her. Honestly, this reaction from Ajay was expected and I totally understand and see why she didn't feel connected by majority of the songs in the album Renaissance. I mean, that wasn't love at first sight for most of us, myself included. It's due to a completly different category of music like house/Dance/Disco etc which are not that popular and Beyoncé has been inspired by queer culture like ballroom with these unique and unusual type of sound, an hommage to African American/Latino LGBTQ+ subculture. This album is different, unpredictable, bold, complicated, full of transition to suprise us, listeners and has shocked a lot. On my first listen, I wasn't blown away by the whole album because of my expectations. I wanted "Beyoncé the vocalist" too but throughout more listen, I have started to love more and more this album and now this is my favorite body of work from Bey. And well, Bey served vocals but in a different way so I'm good. If Ajay wanted to listen to this album again and understand Beyoncé's choices, I think she needs to let go her expectations and like Beyoncé did, let herself explore a different universe in order to enjoy the experience more.

I am actually shocked about everyone who is saying this album is a grower... Sure, I hear something different each listen or focus on a different aspect of each song, but it was pretty clear to me how excellent this album is on first listen. Of course, everyone has their different journey with music - what they like, what they don't like, etc. But as someone who lives for how a song is constructed, I did expect for you to appreciate what the production was doing with all the layers. Also, I've always thought that this was one of her most vocally challenging/exquisite albums. The harmonies are incredibly difficult and impressive, and the melodies are so unique as well, so it's interesting how your main criticism was that she didn't sing enough on the album!

In order to try and make you understand this album a bit more, It sampled a lot of 80’s and 90’s songs (correct me if I’m wrong) and is all about the Ballroom culture. To celebrate this culture that came to life because of racism in pageants. In a few words, people of colour were always eliminated first or could never win because of their colour and they decided to create their own pageants, with categories and prizes to win at the end. All sorts of minorities were present there. If you want to know more on that, watch the TV Show ‘Pose’ by Ryan Murphy, it is very interesting and is about the ballroom culture as well as transgenderism, aids in the time. To me, this album is you either love it or not, either you feel it or you don't. And I think the context that the album is played in is very important, this is an album I would love to hear at a club, or perhaps a concert, not in my bedroom though. There's a few tracks which I really enjoy that have grown on me, such as Alien Superstar, Cuff It, Break My Soul, America Has a Problem, and Summer Renaissance. But overall, I don't particularly connect with this album as a whole either. i think this album is probably her most polarizing album cause it’s significantly different to any other record she’s ever released. she was heavily inspired by disco, house, ballroom-esque, r&b, and afro beats all which she’s never incorporated onto one album so it is a lot to listen to at once. a lot of die hard beyoncé stans hated it and people that love those genres loved this album so it’s a very mixed reception. i personally love and praise that album as the best from 2022 cause it’s so unique and so different to anything anyone released then and it’s something we needed but especially the black queer and trans community (with whomst the album is for).

Your first reaction was a mirror to mine. After my initial listen I texted my friend and said ‘I don’t know if I like it or if it’s a complete mess’. I was initially disappointed, it felt all over the place and superficial. After the lyrical depth, vocals and concept she gave us with Lemonade, I feel like I was expecting more of the same or something even more meaningful. I wasn’t able to truly digest the whole album until I’d had repeated listens (and maybe if it wasn’t Beyonce I wouldn’t have given it so many chances?!), there are FAR too many musical styles going on. However I kept coming back to it, the mist cleared, i read about the inspiration and paid attention to the production details and it’s become my most played record of the last year. It’s the perfect camp, dance record and captures the essence of being in a club with the DJ constantly switching things up. It’s like a shot of adrenaline and if I ever feel like I need a bit of confidence or a distraction, it’s perfect for that. And Lord knows we all needed to just dance after the last few years. It’s the definition of a ‘love it or hate it’ record for sure so your reaction makes complete sense! It took everyone by surprise! My fave track on my initial listen was All Up In your mind (I’d already forced myself to like Break your soul before the album release as I couldn’t accept the fact it was an average song😂but then it did grow on me). Hey AJ, so I had pretty much the same reaction on my initial listen as well. To be frank, I was disappointed. But I kept on it because it's a Beyonce album and I wanted to see if it would grow on me. It took several listens but now I'm a big fan of this album. Right off the bat, Plastic, Cozy, and Summer Renaissance were instant hits for me but what ended up especially growing on me was Pure/Honey and Energy. Deleting Church Girl, Thique, and All Up In Your Mind is what really made me like listening to this album, which is unfortunate but there it is. My final thoughts are that this album is fun, very disco in the way the songs meld into each other, and I would be happy if these songs were played at a club. As a gay man, I really vibed with the sound and lyrics. I would say not to think of it as the album following Lemonade because both of them are so different. Enjoy it on its own and see it as Beyonce doing something new.

Honestly, I was the same. I listened to it when it first came out and didn't like any of the songs except virgos groove. A month later I tried it again and fell in love with it. It's definitely a modern retake of house music, mixed with hiphop influences. Thank you for your honesty 🙏

Girl don’t be sorry you didn’t vibe with the album! When I first listened to it, I didn’t get it at all and I love house/dance music. The only songs I found myself grooving to were Virgo’s Groove, Alien Superstar, Break my Soul and Summer Renaissance, nothing else stood out to me. I was so fed up and wanted to turn off the album the whole time. I eventually listened to the album over a dozen times to finally get it and now I love majority of the album and play it all the time. I still need time on some songs too! Church Girl, I’m looking at you hoe. We all have our own opinions and that’s okay! It’s not for everyone & people are entitled to their tastes and likes! sorry you didn't enjoy the album but i really appreciated and enjoyed your honest reaction! i personally really enjoyed the sound and beyoncé's interpretation of it, but i'll admit it's a bit of an acquired taste + it works better when you're dancing along to it compared to having to sit down and listen. if you wanna give it another shot on your own time, i'd highly recommend playing it while you're doing chores around the house or something (that's how i did my initial listen and i had a blast), but if you still can't connect to it then it can't really be helped. either way, though, absolutely love your videos! keep doing what you do and never give in to anybody else 🙏

So for my experience with this album, I listened to it as soon as it released and... I didn't like a single song because it was alot of unexpected spitting and talk singing like you said. I forgot about it for 3 months and then decided to listen to it again and I loved it. I have no idea why, but it really missed on my initial listen too! Now I listen to it on repeat, although, Energy, Church Girl, and Thique I may still need time with... I very much loved Cozy, Alien Superstar and Cuff It on my second listen, but do agree that this is a very high energy album as a whole, do have to be in the mood to listen to it sometimes, that's what I found! Ajay loves soft pop/indie music with sentimental lyrics so this is NOT going to be the album for her. The day she pops molly and loses her body to dance is when she will learn to love it. Wow I’m surprised you actually didn’t connect to renaissance. But I admire the honesty from you which is why I love and follow u for giving ur unapologetic review to an album/song no matter what. I loved it on my initial listen. I loved the transitions to each track which made it seem like you were in a club setting. I think of this album as a love letter to the LGBTQ+ community. She made this album during the midst of the pandemic and created as a way to inspire happiness and escapism thru music which is why the entire album feels like a night on the dancefloor bc we missed out on going out to celebrate. The album consists of dance music styles from the 70s such as disco and house which paid homage to the black and queer pioneers of those specific genres and you can hear it thru the music she samples/interpolates. I think people who are familiar with ballroom culture will have the best connection to this album bc she catered it to the audience that it represents. I hope this album grows on u more if not then that’s okay! I would advise taking a look at the meanings of the lyrics behind each song as they have messages of self expression, empowerment and LGBTQ+ themes. Love ya 🖤

I had a pretty similar reaction to you on my initial listen. It was not vibing with me. I gave it a little and I gave it another listen later on, and some of the songs clicked more for me. It’s by no means my favorite Beyonce album, but I’ve grown to like it more. Energy is the only song that I just don’t like, but the rest I’ve grown to on some degree. I know you're the type of person who just puts the album to play, and enjoys what you understand and what musically you can feel about It, but it's in these cases that your method gets in the way a little. I think if you had prior knowledge of what Reinaissance means as an album for subcultures and minorities, maybe it would help you understand the album more. Beyoncé made a dance album in which historically marginalized people sought their own liberation through dance music. It's an album that you puts to play for the music itself the sounds, the rhythm. It's not a deep conceptual album like Lemonade or even Self Titled. I think youe should do a revist to the album, start the play and let yourr body do it for you. Also, I think your speaker may be degrading the sound quality. I was able to understand what Beyoncé was saying from the first listen, but listening to her through your video sounded confusing to me too. So maybe listening to the album with headphones might help.

harry's house and renaissance are very different albums, both good but completely different genres. it makes sense that she didn't like renaissance since she doesn't like house music and leans towards pop more. it's literally just her opinion it doesn't mean either album is bad.

i think its pretty understandable she didnt like the album at first listen. it pushes a lot of stereotypes about pop music aside and focuses on some really interesting themes, but that you definitely need to know at least a bit about to really get it. i def think once she sits with it, learn about the background and the inspiration that made renaissance come to life (specially how much the album means to black queer people and the whole ballroom theme around it) she will like it a lot more. even if she doesnt, its okay given that we all know shes not all that into music that gets experimental. anyway if she thought this was a weird one i cant WAIT for motomami (shes gonna hate it and im gonna cry about it)

Trust me, this album was a GROWER! I missed Beyonce's vocals too. But once it clicked, it clicked! There are still some songs that I can do without like Thique and especially Church Girl. I loved this album on initial reaction, maybe because im the type of person who recognizes lyrics as an instrument, for example, a lot of the times I dont know what theyre saying, im just trying to get the vibe of the song until i actually look up the lyrics to see what theyre saying lol. I think a couple main things that helped me love this album is that I am getting really into House music and learning about voguing and that element of the LGBTQIA+ community and thats what helped me connect with this song. I think if you arent aware of that aspect of it, you probably cant connect as easily. Also, I dont expect Beyonce to sing all the time in her songs. I like that shes doing something different other than singing and im open to her changing, thats also why I love the Everything is Love album. I love to hear her rapping because I know she can sing but if you only expect her to sing and arent open to listening to her rap or spit her bars, I can understand how people maybe arent accustomed to it. Overall, I just cared about the vibe and what i love about this album is just the ability to dance and have a good time like I feel like the genre its categorized in fits. I can listen to it as I commute or even cleaning at home, it just makes you feel good if you just accept the vibes (:

When i FIRST listened it was a lot. There is a lot of content on this album, song structure wise and just background, so it's truly understandable to me that you're not vibing yet. Especailly with how they transition w/ each other AND it being a different style sonically and vocally, its not easy to grasp on first listen. Listening w/ headphones is so helpful to help pick apart whats happening w songs like Im that Girl and Virgos groove. I think Ajay is heavy on strong melodies and smooth production - which on this album, if it isn't a genre you generally favour, can sound a little 'messy' I guess? I pick up she doesn't like when songs randomly transition from line to line abruptly, which this album does a lot IMO, but it was for sure all intentional. im gonna be so honest when i listened to renaissance for the first time ever, i didnt connect with it either. the only tracks i liked at first were cuff it and virgos groove LMAO but something made me come back to the album and at this point its my 2nd favorite album shes ever made right behind bday. all that to say if you do find yourself wanting to relisten on your own time i personaly think its worth it but im glad you gave your genuine reaction

This album is a re-listen album. Initially I liked some songs but a lot of them disconnected with me, until I relistened. That relisten to this album is so crucial and it definitely makes understanding the album and vision a lot more clear and fun!
