Mystery Question Time

Comments

In your time of playing RPG's in the past whats a couple of your favourite moments that you have ever seen play out? Either as DM or player.

Nick G

Hey Tom, loving Mystery Quest so far! No worries if you'd prefer to keep the specifics under your cap, but I'm curious: What's your stance on revising the world on the fly in response to player actions? For instance making enemies/NPCs stronger or weaker, adding or removing them entirely, and so on; whether it's for difficulty management, storytelling or entertainment purposes. Does it depend on the game? Thanks!

AllTinker

How long on average do you reckon you spend preparing for a one-shot campaign for a video?

Olivier Langevoort

You all seem to be able to improv and think on the fly quite well. Is this a skill you practice and if so, how do you do that?

Benjamin Blundell

Any interest in trying Pirate Borg? Your Mork Borg videos inspired me to try GMing it for my friends.

GateShark

I need some advice on how you manage to voice these NPCs so beautifully. What goes through your mind in those moments before you introduce a new character?

Zack F

I'd love to hear your opinions and tactics regarding creating scary plotlines for Call Of Cthulhu (or similar games), and on how to describe un-describable horrors? Loving Mystery Quest - brilliant format!

Inkar Fidelis

Do you prefer playing or dming?

Horrible_Sharts

Obligatory Not Tom, but there's some great online tools. I run Pathfinder 2e, and Foundry makes the entire game basically automated. For Pathfinder 1e, I've used Roll20 and it worked very well for character sheet management and tracking modifiers. Roll20 involves more initial setup, but once everything is done you rarely have to go back and change things.

Goot Poot

I don't know if you have a preference on superhero TTRPGs but if you do, do you have what ones do you like? Mutants and Masterminds? Champions Complete? Masks A New Generations? Marvel Multiverse?

Skeletalrose

Hi Tom, You manage to tread a fine line between tension/horror and humour. Do you have a process to keep things on track? Thanks for the good work

George

How do you handle the chaos of your players? and how do you organise your notes?

Ben Baker

homies died

Ward Pearce

Are there any online tools you can use now a days to make TT games less number crunchy. For example, if I ran something like a Pathfinder 1e game.

NeutralQuartz

What do you look for, story, mechanics, structure-wise when picking adventures to play on Mystery Quest? And how is it different from the RPGs you might play when not recording?

KremSlumdump

Obviously not Tom but, if you haven't already you should check out the Ironsworn/Ironsworn: Starforged RPG, it's a purpose built solo TTRPG with great narrative based mechanics (and the game is free!)

KremSlumdump

Because complaining is fun, what's the worst TTRPG you've ever read/played? Or alternatively, what's the worst rule you've ever found in a TTRPG?

Sammi

Any tips for running games remotely? None of my friends live in the same city but we’re all keen to play ttrpgs

connor

If the players had kept The Disintegrator from the previous CoC adventure, would you have let them use it in another campaign, even though it would completely change the usual combat-avoidance style of CoC? Where would you have drawn the line in terms of its use? How would you potentially get it out of the players hands?

Hodhedge

Super happy you played Mörk Borg. I'm going to start a game in a few months for it as the GM. Still new to me so I'm trying to read up on it. I don't remember if you mentioned anything about the Calendar of Nechrubel, but how would you use the Miseries from the calendar? I assume it's a lot of you use your imagination since some are kind of vague.

TurboDepression

will we see a return of John Steel and Professor Griswold?

nick

Why was John Steel renamed to Nick Steel in yogsquest 9?

nick

When Warhammer RPG?!

Gothos

I know it was a heck of a long time ago, but what was it like for you working on the first three Yogsquest? Did you and Lewis write the adventures together? Were you communicating on an earpiece? Was it you running the game with Lewis's face deepfaked over you? I'd love to know a bit more about those games :)

Richard Mosen

Quick question: Is it a medical condition or does your face just look like that? All jokes aside keep up the great work :)

Marcus Vasbinder

Dear Almighty DM Tom, I am a DM, and I was wondering what draws you to certain TTRPGs. Whenever I add a game to my pile (steadily growing past 35 games that I still have yet to run), it’s usually because of being thematically specific, or having good character creation. Games like MÖRK BORG, Heart: The City Beneath, and Blades in the Dark are some of my favorite thematic games. When you’re looking for TTRPGs, what makes you decide to run them?

Goot Poot

I was also going to ask if you had a favorite monster (based on their unique mechanics) from any of the games you've run / want to run!

colebotman

Hey Tom, If you were to run a Hastur Call of Cthulu, how would you do it? Or, are there any King in Yellow adventures you've read that you're excited about? I'm mainly curious as to how you could represent the accursed play that drives its readers mad, and the whole idea of the yellow sign and etc. Keep up the awesome work!

colebotman

I'm about to start running a game for some friends, how to you ensure the encounters are balanced and not a boring steam roll or an impossible tpk?

Coindragon

I'm interested to know: you (Tom) as the GM, do you prefer to have full control over the game you're running or do you prefer to let your players "build" the world they play in and you just step in for descision making, macguffins, and rules? If so, how do/would you encourage your players to be more creative and a part of the story beyond just making decisions for their character? I hope that makes sense. It's something I've struggled with as a GM and can't find as much useful related advice online.

BoarBound

Since I am lacking a nice group, I am considering trying out solo-adventures, since I have fond memories of them from 20 years ago. Should I try to find CYOA-books? Or better try to get AI to be my dungeon master? Any advise would be very appreciated! =)

The Emberfox

I’m running a Call of Cthulhu adventure for my friends on Halloween and I’m writing it now. What’s the best way of setting that spooky tone in TTRPGS, but especially CoC?
