As a leftist though, this was not a good thing either, as his alternative was to strengthen the CIA and defer a lot of power to the Dulles who proceeded to wage political violence and colonial oppression at a massive scale globally. We seem to have settled in as a nation to embracing the attitude that there's no reason we can't do both.
