We used to have a "teen" section for ages 13 - 18 (for basically ever-- this is what you'd find in your high school library's fiction section), but as the books got more mature, around the mid/late 2010s, that section morphed into "young adult" and the mature content kinda seeped in and became more 16+-ish.

2025-01-05 00:49:55 +0000 UTCIn regards to the booktok conversation: I agree with you completely that these books are paint by numbers stories that are also poorly edited, but I don’t think it necessarily means anything about our changing attention spans. Everything new is old, and these books, to me, merely seem like the newest iteration of cheap pulp fiction. We’ve always churned out cheap, formulaic, easily accessible smut, and this is just the newest way we’re doing it. I think it’s more of a problem that the marketing of these books obfuscates (intentionally or not) that they are, in fact, pulp fiction. Like, give it a smutty cover so everyone is clear that it’s a fucking bodice ripper book. We even have terms like bodice ripper specifically for that purpose! It’s fine that these stories are out there and easy to find, I just think it would be better if we were crystal clear that they’re basically erotica.

I never liked reality shows because of all of the negative drama and unlikable characters and I never thought it was possible to do good reality shows without that. BUT, turns out, you can! I just love how absolutely wholesome they have managed to do reality shows while still keeping them interesting and dramatic! I highly recommend the one where they have competitions and vote out each other, and the one where they're in an escape room, as well as the mentioned bachelor episode. Maybe not to everyones taste, especially if you like all of that negativity, but for the rest - give it a try! ;)
