Are Smartphones Bad For Us? - EARLY ACCESS, AD-FREE, AND UNCENSORED

Hi. Today, we're digging into all the research around smartphone and social media use, especially among teens. Do they cause depression and alienation? Or is this all an overblown moral panic? Or... a confounding third thing, where it's a little of both?

Ruby Tuesday's served me moldy grapes as a child

I teach 14-16 year olds and over the last two years, the biggest change in smartphone use is that I can no longer get the students to hand in or put away their phones (in my country we are not allowed to physically confiscate them, which I think is totally fair). My students figured out that if they all refuse, I will have to spend half of my lecture convincing each student to put the phones away or hand them in. Instead of wasting my time on this struggle, I decided to change my curriculum so that most of the work include having to solve problems and find information using phones, and it has been awesome to watch the effect. I am now convinced that most of the problem is school curricula being hopelessly outdated and boring.

To be accused of being on drugs hits different when one watches the channel sober for once. Loved the B plot BTW.

The video did not make the argument or come to conclusion I was expecting, which was great! I was actually thinking about not watching it because I thought I knew what you would say. I should have known better. Ha! I particularly liked the part about the solutions/underlying causes at the end. Thanks for continuing to shed light on things!

Katie's second no-ad break was my favorite ever. it was short and slightly disturbing. Just like I like em I think you're on to something when you mention possible underlying causes of anxiety and trauma that could lead people, especially young people, to have a less than healthy dependency on the technology. As you suggest, the threat of gun violence and climate change are obvious culprits. Could another be an apparent worldwide rise of fascism? I don't know what it's like to be a kid in 2024, but that's sure something that makes me want to curl up in a fetal position with my security blanket, whether it's made of fleece or pixels.

I'll have you know that I donate $3 a month to wikipedia. ($2 less than I give you.) I'm poor, or it would be more. but it's truly important to support the sources of information that work, and Wikipedia works pretty well.

… after this ad. Cut to: Cody, wearing an elaborate Japanese demon mask. He begins an interpretive dance that ends in him dramatically miming downing a big glass of… something. He lifts off the mask. Cody: Get it? Guys? Do you get it? “Noh” ads for patreon members? Ads in the traditional Japanese “Noh” style of theatre? Ah, you get it.

you know... a lot of those pisa graphs only look that scary dramatic because.... they dont start at 0 the Y axis is massively shifted upward and zoomed in to exagerate minor variation

I keep thinking you're either holding a calculator or a classic game boy

The production quality on the intro and katie's portions was fantastic! Great episode, and the best so far technically!
