The Fragile Creator Economy - EARLY ACCESS, AD-FREE, AND UNCENSORED

YouTube link: https://youtu.be/Ma_SXMOYR88

Hi. In today's episode, we look at how people make money on the internet, how vulnerable tech platforms affect people's livelihoods, and why "being your own boss" often means your boss is just Jeff Bezos.

The Fragile Creator Economy - EARLY ACCESS, AD-FREE, AND UNCENSORED

So has it become obvious yet to everyone that social media apps and “ecosystems” were all designed and developed by utter maniacal, extractive shitwads? ALL the major social platforms are built to extract from huge populations there for entirely different reasons. We need an Etsy, a FB, a YT, an X, a TikTok built BY CREATORS, structured the way we all wanted to believe the abuse apps were structured, with creators as collective owners. Cody’s right; we can’t be asking “the boss” for better working conditions when we run our own businesses. We have to build the environments online that we have some control over and that we can actually benefit from. Capitalists are fucking everything up from indie music publishing to games to crowdfunding to the internet search function. Time to take it all back.

Second on a Gig Economy video! Great idea! Having people "bid" to do jobs naturally depreciates their work... Its so messed up.

Me too!

Thanks to Patreon, you only have to listen to what WE tell you to do. Yes. Mwahahaha.

A couple of months ago, I gave up my stable office job to hustle full-time as a translator/interpreter/language content creator (I am a linguist), and I hate to say this, but everything that you said in the video applies to the language services industry as well. I have to work my ass off to make a living. BTW, could you make a video on gig economy platforms like Upwork and Fiverr and how they deprecate the value of work? Thank you for your efforts!

Ania

Now you gotta drop your Etsy shop name! :D

Yeps

This was fun to watch while making my sculptures for my newly opened etsy-shop ... yeey... this is fine :')

According to the economists, a feature of a free competitive market is that profits are unnatural. Profits act as a signal for new market entrants to shift resources and eliminate profits. If this doesn’t happen, it’s because of some factor impinging free competition - patents or economies of scale, etc. You wouldn’t expect every industry to be a zero-profit industry, but it’s alarming when every industry is making record profits year after year. That defies the very definition of a “perfectly competitive market”. After all the hand-wringing about communism, we’ve still found ourselves in a command and control economy, except this one is controlled by the greediest of private citizens. The government has been drowned in a bathtub.

We are incorporating some short(er) videos into our release schedule, but we've still got plenty of long(ish) videos in the pipeline! Some recent topics just haven't required Peterson-level running times.

I feel like a few of the more recent videos have been kinda short (well I mean, "short" - not legit short like the Jordan Peterson video - but short by SMN standards, less than 30 minutes) and I'm curious, is that an intentional creative choice you guys made for the future of the channel? Or did my brain just happen to remember the only 2 sub-30m vids over the span of like 4 months and do that thing brains do where it insists that it's identified a pattern despite only having one crappy piece of circumstantial evidence

Clearly the old merch host found out about all the corned cream that Warmbo requires and they didn’t want to support that. Cowards.

Chris Snider

Again, thanks guys!

Karen Cox

Thanks. I still send your electric utility episode to friends of mine to explain why their power bills are so stinkin' high, and now this one is just as useful. I've had several businesses I adored go under since 2016 thanks to the horrible ways on-line middlemen work, and now I know why! Also, now I know why I get 50 million spam emails when I buy something from Etsy!

Karen Cox

If patreon collapses I’m fine with just mailing you guys cash every month.
