Palestine, Israel, Bloodlust, and Where We Go From Here - AD FREE
Added 2023-10-13 18:01:53 +0000 UTCHi. In today's episode, Katy, Cody, and Jonathan discuss the aftermath of Hamas' attack in Israel, the violent retribution taking place in Gaza, and the scary post-9/11 vibes of it all.
Here are two previous episodes of "Some More News" we reference during the podcast:

Finally listening to this. I shut down when all this started. I get annoyed when people look at change at complain about feeling old, because it's this blatantly ignorant repetition of past mistakes that makes me feel old.

2023-10-24 16:43:51 +0000 UTCThe thing I find frustrating is that so much western support of Israel(not counting the Evangelicals who think it will help them speed-run the end times) is barely masked antisemitism. The posture is basically "Well, I don't have anything against Jews, but wouldn't it be better if they had *their own* country"

2023-10-14 17:33:19 +0000 UTCAt 23:50, the phenomenon Cody mentioned (insistance that people condemn Hamas before criticizing Israel) feels a lot like the “All Lives Matter” response to the Black Lives Matter movement.

2023-10-14 12:45:20 +0000 UTCI think you guys might’ve mentioned before the that you’re not avid TikTok scrollers, so I wanna mention that as a Gen Z-er who does scroll, I found it surprising that there were a lot of leftists that had a “How dare you?” attitude when it came to any expressions about condemning Hamas, judging Hamas, separating Hamas from Palestine and the Palestinian people at large, etc. I’m always trying to keep my head down and learn more whenever something like this happens, especially when Palestinians and the voices of their descendants speak, but I found this particular set of sentiments hard to wrap my head around. It’s not fringe, either. It seems to be somewhat popular on the platform. I will say— and this is just generally speaking without reference to this particular situation— that be careful about blanket condemnations of terrorism. It’s a word that largely seems to have been monopolized by the state; therefore, it’s easy for a lot of things to be labeled terrorism that are more complicated than they might seem just based off of one word (think Black Panther Party).

2023-10-13 21:18:37 +0000 UTCIt feels all but impossible to talk about all of this, because so many people, either intentionally and unintentionally, seem to be unable to distinguish between Hamas and Palestine, and between the Israeli government and the Israeli people. So when we say things like "I am afraid that the Israeli government will utilize this opportunity to bring substantial harm to the Palestinian people", you get responses like "Oh so the Israeli people should just let Hamas attack them!?" and it's difficult and exhausting to even begin to point out the several layers of flaws in that conclusion.

2023-10-13 21:17:03 +0000 UTCConflict Is Not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility, and the Duty of Repair, by Sarah Schulman has a good examination of how this works, with specific reference to the way the state of Israel characterizes all forms of Palestinian resistance as abuse
