Hi. In today's episode, we look at how an influx of tourists often has a negative impact on a location's environment, infrastructure, and residents.

Dear God, is there nothing that we do in this country that isn't fucking evil as hell and benefits only rich people? What the hell...?

I'm glad I am not the only one who thought of the Jedi order when you mentioned "Mission 66". This is mostly not new to me, but the details and research is. Thank you!

Great episode. It really put a damper on my upcoming vacation to Hawaii, though. I might have to embrace the moral and do drugs while I'm there.

I know this is going to sound like small beans compared to the major issues with tourism... my backyard opens into a national park and the trails got so much increased use during the pandemic I actually stopped going to it for a while. I usually carried a little grocery bag to pick up trash on the trails but now I'm starting to wonder if I need to bring a large kitchen bag. And the number of people who do not at all attempt to pick up their doggo poop is equally frustrating, especially since the parks provide bags at various trash/recycling stations over the trails. Many of the caves in the area are closed because of the number of people who adversely affected the ecosystem by exploring and touching things they shouldn't. An entire colony of bats was wiped out by disease being spread by humans. The others are still recovering.

I work in environmental testing and remediation. This horrifies me. I think if people really knew the things we could do for the environment but don't because of money they wouldn't feel proud of us.

I live in PNW and its brutal. You have to reserve camping months in advance. The parks are so crowded you can sometimes wait hours to park. I sat in line at the Hoh Rainforest for 3 hours before I gave up the ghost and went home. Mid July to early September. That's the only time of year it's decent to be outside. If you want some peaceful nature during those months forget the parks.

Great episode idea. Really important.

Oh my gosh!!! I am born and raised on Maui, Hawaii and I constantly think “man, Cody would do a show about this if he knew about it.” About SO MANY THINGS. This is awesome.

Did yall do an episode about whale dungeons before or am I imagining that? What a fantastic episode!!! I'll be traveling soon so this was right up my alley

I'm from Oahu, and when I was briefly staffing at the state legislature, there were a bunch of bills that were trying to ban the sale of certain types of sunscreen that are well-known to destroy coral reefs, even in very low ppm when they get into the ocean. It's been extensively documented and researched. There are many safe and affordable alternatives. If I recall correctly, the Hawaii tourism authority sent representatives to speak against the bills, because it would dissuade tourists who wanted to bring their own skincare products from the us mainland or abroad, and make them feel guilty about their usage. Realistically, the reason was overhead changing out large hotel supplies, but even their stated reason was comically horseshit.
