Personally, I find the idea of white nihilism quite interesting from a sociological standpoint. A form of attention-seeking “pseudo-nihilism” that is brought on by privilege and is concentrating on only one issue, not understanding that all aspects of society are connected. Saying “what you’re doing is useless because we’re all fucked anyway” on Twitter isn’t really nihilism, because a nihilist wouldn’t even bother with making their opinion known as they would believe it to also be pointless. I think arguing semantics in this instance is blatantly missing the point. However, I also think we should not demonize these people. This creates a straw man argument and dehumanizes every individual that gives this kind of response. It is indeed counterproductive to say such things, but that’s the nature of 99% of Twitter interactions anyways. Also, that doesn’t mean that their attitude isn’t motivated by deep fear and sorrow at the state of the world. Instead of saying “fuck you” to these people, maybe saying “I hear you, but two things can be true at the same time” would open a line of dialogue instead of encouraging further division within the left.
