Also, I'm glad you brought Joel back for this week. I'm going to track down his work as his insights were truly fascinating; thank you!

An academic from Canada here in one of the lightly-hit areas (no new cases for twelve days now -- woo!), but even so the autumn term is 100% digital. Schools may be opening, but staggered so that social distancing can be maintained but kids and parents are definitely told to be prepared to return home at the first sign of a spike in cases. We have to be prepared for the worst. I know you said you're embarassed Katie, but as a non-American, YOU have no reason to be; most of us are astounded and our hearts are bleeding for the citizens who are suffering because of the government's incompetence.

I live in New Zealand and we are pretty much covid free (have had a few cases with people coming back into our country but we have made all new arrivals do 2 weeks in a fancy hotel paid for by the govt.) but anyhoooo - after we did 5 weeks of total lock down, it took an additional 2 weeks to get students back into schools because people still felt worried about it (even with 0 cases in 20 days). I can't imagine how scary it would be to put kids into schools in areas where covid is rife. However, I do disagree with the mask thing. It was never mandatory to wear masks here - cos we shut our shit down before we spread it everywhere. Very few wore masks in public because we stayed out of the public for 5 weeks and didn't run around screaming to open up the economy.
