The Hebrew word used in the Old Testament phrase "fear of the Lord" is "yare" which can be translated as both "fear" and "revere." Ancient Hebrew was a very word poor language where words had multiple meanings. The New Testament was written in Greek, and the Greek word used is phobos (as in phobia). It can mean fear and also awe. "...cause you know sometimes words have two meanings..."

that does make more sense; thanks. always puzzled me

I don't believe it to be a mistranslation, as such; I think it might be one of those cases where the original Greek and the modern English just don't quite line up. My understanding is that "fear" in this context means "to be in awe of" more than "viscerally reject".

serious side question; is 'To fear god' a weird mistranslation someone made that the rest of Christendom just went with? Because I fear spiders and I'm definitely not going to worship them, or maintain their webs if they're inside my house!

This is how the "knights of old" were expected to conduct themselves. It's a far cry from what this Gross Man is spouting off about. Too bad his name is Dave. Code of Chivalry To fear God and maintain His Church To serve the liege lord in valour and faith To protect the weak and defenceless To give succour to widows and orphans To refrain from the wanton giving of offence To live by honour and for glory To despise pecuniary reward To defend the welfare of all To obey those placed in authority To guard the honour of fellow knights To eschew unfairness, meanness and deceit To keep faith At all times to speak the truth To persevere to the end in any enterprise begun To respect the honour of women

So I knew going into this that cops were taught a very "us vs them, anyone could be a bad guy shoot first ask questions later" kind of mentality a lot, but I had no idea it was like this. The fact that Dave Grossman is allowed to train anyone is absolutely terrifying. It's basically the perfect rhetoric for producing brainwashed fanatics; he sounds like a cult leader.
