Hey news dudes. I really liked the idea of contextualizing gun violence in terms of social policy failures. I've been wanting to look into the implications of the lack of a functional social support system on mass-murderers, particularly in the context of these events acting as a sort of extended suicide (i.e., people (usually men) obliterating signifiers of their identity). Beyond the added stress aspect, the fact that so much of our ability to survive depends on a person maintaining employment (e.g., housing, healthcare, etc.), and that cultural narratives conflate "success" with "worth", failing to maintain a job becomes a sort of universal failure. This might be a little in the weeds, but there's a potential link between suicidal ideation/attempts and a kind of categorical, "all or nothing" interpretation of events. Basically, instead of "I failed at X", you think "I'm a failure." Instead of "I'm struggling today" you think "I can't cope." Etc. The question I have been trying to pin down is whether a functional social safety net, in which basic necessities aren't dependent on a person's continued "success" at maintaining employment, might mitigate the severity of perceived failure, thereby decreasing categorical denunciation of the self, and reducing the likelihood that a person will experience or act on suicidal/homocidal thoughts. I definitely recognize that gun ownership is a huge determining factor as to why this happens here so much more than anywhere else, but I can't help wondering whether our unique sociocultural narratives and policy failures might not be priming us for these events. I'm not sure it's that great a comedy premise, but since you all touched on the topic, I wanted to toss it out there.
