If the hoppers rattled open a little along the way, you might not see much in one spot unless the train stopped. Also, this stuff is water soluble, so the weather could have washed it away. I guess we’ll never know for sure!

Wow! Wouldn’t the big trail of nitrate be pretty easy to find though? Is it plausible that some folks scooped it all off the tracks?

Oh, I just noticed the RR was Union Pacific. UP has the shittiest hopper cars I’ve ever seen in service. Many of them were new in the 1970’s. I can actually believe one just leaked all of its cargo on the trip.

I worked for years unloading hopper cars like the one with the missing ammonium nitrate. It’s very easy to open the hoppers with something as simple as a two foot length of rebar. What’s not so simple is getting the material off the ground once it has dumped out. If the cars were stationary, I suppose you could shovel it into a wheel barrow and take it, but you would risk being run over should the train start moving. If the train started moving soon after the hoppers were opened, there would be probably a half-mile two-foot deep trail of material between the tracks, which I suppose could be shoveled up too, but it shouldn’t take much investigation to find it. As for a leak, maybe a single hopper would develop a leak, leaving significant material in the car. To leak the car empty, all three hoppers would need to be leaking. Not saying I know what happened, but if someone stole the stuff, they sweat for it.

i was just road tripping the northeast, but by the time i got to northwest ny i was already exhausted and only went to Syracuse lol. i was really craving for a garbage plate and 'Cuse was surprisingly cute, so I'll try to pass by next time i hit the road
