The gamer episode is defiantly a bit cringy but tbh this show does cringe pretty well for the most part so I didn't mind, also to answer your question of why they care about protecting people so much is because while the miraculous cure can fix things like injuries or akuma effects it can't undo death.

Not because she wasn’t the better player, she clearly was, but more because of her reason for even joining, to play with Adrien, not because she really wanted to represent the school, not because she LOVES video games, but to do something that if she stopped being a creepy stalker for 5 seconds she could just ask to do. Even in the end she was still complaining that she only wanted to play with Adrien. Idk it’s just a personal thing I guess.
