The fact that in the show they acknowledge Varian's mental instability is great. He crossed the line of being sympathetic a long time ago, and I LOVE IT! He has issues that need to be resolved, so he can't just be redeemed all at once and that's a good thing

Varian is a great villain, but I’m surprised at how many people think of him as a “sympathetic” villain. To me, he just seems like a child throwing a tantrum and blaming everyone on something out of their control. That idea, that he’ll make his father proud. How? By betraying the nation his father protected? By threatening to hurt or kill people? He declares himself the “bad guy”, which itself a sign that he knows he’s just lashing out, and that he doesn’t care. Great, he’s a textbook sociopath.
