When Seth first saw Cyrla appear in the corridor, he understood what was going on. Just the abyssal mana subtly flowing out of her body was enough of an indication.
In the only time he had talked to her, she had come across as an over enthusiastic researcher whose mana he hadn't been able to sense and he had seen no reason to appraise her level and class, but in their second encounter, she wasn't hiding anything anymore.
He finally understood why she had wanted to borrow him to check his mana. It had all been a trap, one that he had avoided.
Unfortunately, he had fallen into another one.
Cyrla Krin - Level 35, Class - Servant of the Abyss
One of the silver linings about their situation was that Cyrla was a mid Rank 4, one he could easily handle now that he had moved up to Rank 5. The problem was her “babies” as she called them.
A lesser abyssal horror let out a sneering noise as it lumbered towards him, its whipped tendrils swinging at him in a downward motion, but Seth twisted his body just in time to avoid it before sending one of his conjured blades, brimming with mana towards the monster.
It tried to protect its face with its tendril, but the blades cut through them and hit its eyes, showing improved power.
As the notification appeared in front of his eyes, Seth briefly looked at the monster, its hideous face masked with blood spurting out of it was a sight made for a nightmare.
Yeah, certainly not a baby. We are dealing with a crazy cultist here.
He thought as more and more lesser abyssal horrors charged at him. It seemed like a lot of them were focusing on him despite him already managing to kill more than a few.
On top of it, no matter how many he killed, more of them would appear.
Frowning as he jumped to dodge a tendril which was trying to knock him over, he activated Void Dominance as a purple glow took over his eyes, making the creatures pause in their charge as an unknown force pressured down on them.
One of them even faltered, falling right in front of Seth who kicked it towards the wall. Turning into paste, the lesser abyssal horror died down, but more charged at him.
Despite radiating an aura that made the creatures fear them, they seemed to still mindlessly rush at him, albeit with a bit of shakiness in their actions.
Not giving too much heed to it, Seth kept moving his blade in all directions, trying to not use too many skills with mana to preserve it as he killed the horrors.
A tendril nearly struck his chin, but he leaned back just in time before grabbing it with superhuman reflexes and pulled.
During his action, three more lesser abyssal horrors swung at him and just breathing in the murky miasma filled air was enough to give him a headache.
Deciding to crush them at the same time, he pierced the eye of the monster first, feeling blood on his face and then while using the tendril, he swung the body of the dead horror towards its approaching comrades as he spun.
One by one, all of them were hit by it, getting pushed back and stumbling into other lesser abyssal horrors.
Another wave of exhaustion hit him as Seth dropped the monster and lumbered forward to finish off the three monsters scrambling to pick themselves up from the ground.
Three swings and he got more notifications of his kills.
By this point, he knew exactly where to aim to kill the horrors in one strike, but he didn't know for how long he would be able to keep doing it.
His shoulders hunched and he tried to take deep breaths, sprawling his body across the wall to rest. His vision shook a bit from the after effects of his skill, but it wasn't as bad as the last few times.
Still, he did his best to keep going and a cry of pain took his attention.
Looking over at a heap of abyssal horrors, he saw Xarth and Log blocking the tendrils of the horrors with their large weapons, looking far more injured than the last time he had seen them.
Xarth in particular looked like he had taken a beating with a whip as chunks of his armour fell to the ground, marks and bruises revealing themselves. With a larger axe than what he was used to, he swung down as a glow covered his weapon, but the lesser abyssal horror smoothly avoided it thanks to the pause between the strike and smashed into the beastman.
It sent him stumbling backwards and more tendrils came to keep him on the ground, binding themselves onto his arms and legs.
Xarth dropped his weapon and struggled with the bindings.
“Xarth!” Log shouted out, looking back towards his friend, but before he could move back to save him, a tendril struck him right in the face. Blood coated his teeth as more tendrils struck his stomach, causing him to kneel over.
He moved his mace in a haphazard manner, trying to scare away the lesser abyssal horrors, but it didn't matter as more of them pressed down on them.
In the back, the same situation was happening with Zara and Zacky.
A large cut could be seen on the stomach of Zara as she sprawled on the floor, corpses of lesser abyssal horrors around her.
Her chest heaved up and down as she moved to aim more fireballs at the charging creatures, but unlike the ones she had used before, her spells lacked strength and dissipated as a tendril struck it, not even being able to lit it up on fire.
Zacky stood right in front of her, trying his best to defend her, but there were too many monsters around hkm, pressing down more each second.
His blade moved as he used his skills to land quick attacks, but with a snap, a tendril lashed at his hand, making him drop his dagger.
He turned to pick it up, but another one charged at him, making him fall on the ground, an expression of fear and horror etching on his face as more of the abyssal creatures approached.
Looking at the scene, Seth stepped up to defend them, but he didn't know if he would be able to kill all the horrors.
Even if he did, he was sure more would come up.
They were never-ending.
So, he turned his head towards Cyrla, his eyes trying to find the source of the lesser abyssal horrors before stopping at her cane.
A gem sat just on top of it and his instincts told him that it was the reason for all the lesser abyssal horrors to be here.
.
Abyssal mana bursted out of it as she battled Rebecca, her barriers on the verge of breaking with all the cracks on their surface. Still, she kept pushing her mana, trying to hold out her friend.
“Give up, Rebecca. You will never be able to defeat me,” Cyrla spoke as a blast hit the ground in front of Rebecca's barrier, splinters flying under the cracks and hitting the mage. “Just surrender and I would spare your life, keeping our relationship in mind.”
“No, it's you who's going to be defeated here and go to the academy with me. You know, what they do to graduates who become criminals, or worse, cultists.”
Cyrla winced at those words. “Academy have nothing on me now.”
She tapped her cane on the ground as a bigger blast of mana emerged out of it, breaking the barrier in a second and before Rebecca could cast another one of them, Cyrla moved.
One more blast buzzed out of her cane and Rebecca froze, but before it could touch her, Seth pushed her out of the way as they struggled to keep their feet on the ground.
“Seth, I was thinking my babies would have already dealt with you,” Cyrla said, stomping her foot on the ground as if she was annoyed. “Too bad. You are still standing. Not for long.”
As she said that, more and more blasts headed their way. Unlike them, Cyrla mana reserves seemed to be full and there was no strain on her face as she kept firing her spells.
Thinking quickly, Seth jumped out of the way with Rebecca, using Flickering Step to his use.
“We need to kill her,” he said, whispering to Rebecca next to him and glancing at the cracks on the floor left behind by the blasts. “I believe if we get that cane, we could stop the lesser abyssal horrors. Somehow, it's connected to summoning them.”
“Then, we just have to capture her and take the cane away from her.”
“No, there's no time to. She has numbers on her side and we are barely standing. We need to kill her fast or we would be the ones to be captured,” Seth explained, but his reasoning seemed to not satisfy Rebecca who shook her head.
A glint flashed in her eyes as she looked at Cyrla who was in the middle of firing more blasts towards them. “We can't do that. Even if she's a cultist, I rather we capture her and let the authorities handle them. She's my classmate, you know and even if I have bad experiences with her, it don't mean I want to kill her.”
“There's no time to think about that!”
He picked her up and flickered again as an abyssal blast headed their way, appearing quite a far distance from Cyrla.
Hesitating, he looked at Rebecca who seemed to be in two minds about Cyrla and gave up on convincing her.
A part of him couldn't blame her.
If someone told him to kill a person he had known for a long time, no matter what type of experiences they had together, he would surely hesitate. But this was different and purely self defence.
If they didn't kill her, they were going to be the ones to be killed.
Rebecca's feelings didn't matter here, so he he stepped forward, charging up at Cyrla who raised her cane towards him and fired.
The blast of energy moved at a rapid pace and hit him right in the stomach, throwing him backwards.
“Seth!” Rebecca cried out, conjuring up a forceball and moving it towards Cyrla who shrugged.
“He's not dead, don't worry. Once I deal with you, he's going to come with me.”
She turned her attention away from Seth and aimed at Rebecca who put up another barrier, causing Cyrla to grit her teeth.
That was close!
Seth sighed, looking down at his armour. Parts of it were corroded thanks to the blasts, but it hadn't hurt as much because he himself was used to manipulating abyssal mana and easily shook off the blast.
Fortunately, his plan had worked.
Looking up, he saw Cyrla and Rebecca still engaged in the battle and decided to start the next step. Pulling into the last bits of mana he had left, he felt the sensation of a cloak covering him, hiding him in the environment.
Then, he got up and moved stuck to the walls, careful to avoid the lesser abyssal horrors that still seemed to be looking for him.
Pivoting with silent footsteps around Cyrla, he reached her back and stared at it.
The miasma flowed around her, cloaking her body, but it wasn't enough to harm him. It also acted as a deterrent as he was able to hide himself in it.
“Give up, Rebecca! You will never be able to defeat me! Your barrier will break soon!”
“You need to listen to me, Cyrla! The path you are in would simply lead to—”
“Shut up!”
As the conversation continued between them, Seth moved ahead, one step at a time before he stood right behind her and without another thought, abyssal mana flowed into his blade.
Maybe, it was the fluctuation in mana that Cyrla noticed, but she lowered her cane and turned around, but before she could even look at him, his blade pierced her back.
With all his energy, he twisted as the abyssal mana flowed through his blade, destroying the body of Cyrla. She swung her arm, trying to fight back, but with his other arm, Seth punched her in the face.
The cane dropped on the ground as he pressured her and held her neck.
He took out his secondary blade as Cyrla struggled in his arms.
“L-Let me go now! The Great One would never let you go and you would—”
“We will see about that!”
He frowned before slicing her neck with his blade. With a thud, her body fell on the ground and the rusty smell of blood filled the corridor.
Seth's expression hardened as he looked at the body of Cyrla and as he raised his head, his eyes stopped at Rebecca who stared back, her face completely going white.
A silence followed between them and it was only broken by the notification in front of him.
