Hey there, welcome to the first entry in a series of posts that I hope will be an interesting look into how and what I draw. Please let me know if there's something i can do to improve these - or if there are any topics you'd like covered in future :)
Over the last year or two i've kinda nailed down my sketching process, so i feel confident in how i'm doing things now - and the general process is as such:
1) Using a watercolour brush, draw the pose and then add on general detail. The beauty of a watercolour brush is that it Blends, so i can build up opacity by drawing over things again. (i might've gotten a bit focussed on making Lara's bear body bigger and curvier here...)
2) Next, i refine the sketch with a smaller watercolour brush on a separate layer. Clip Studio Paint has a layer-colour toggle, which proves super useful for tracing over things, hence the second image has the first sketch "underneath" in a light blue. In this stage i focus on nailing the facial expression and fine outfit detail.
3) Then I use either the watercolour or an airbrush to do some basic colouring and a background. At this point i tend to be hankering to start the lineart, so I don't go too intensive on the background detail...
4) The final image has a lot in common with the rough sketch, but i'll often think of a few details that need changing while i'm doing the lineart. In this case, i realised Lara's hand would be more fun to draw the other way round ( though the pose ended up similarly unnatural looking :( ) and i added some more detail to her coat and the signpost in the background.
And that's how I sketch things, at a high level view. Is there anything from this piece that you'd like to learn more about? Let me know below :)
