My take on sad dramas

First I wanna highlight Genevieve, she was the person who recommended “when life gives you tangerines”

While it can be classified as a drama with a lot of sadness she understands that the show offers something more and can accurately recommend a drama that contains a lot of sadness but we will still like it

Next I will give my own explanation but Genevieve’s was nice and concise when she was responding to someone in the chat room

in short I can enjoy a sad comedy, sad action , horror and sadness, just not…ONLY SADNESS LOL

“I acknowledge that I didn’t do a good enough job explaining my desire to avoid watching shows that are sad

I’m not against sad shows . Please listen to this emphasis. I’m against watching shows where they have a long stretch of NOTHING BUT SADNESS.

I’m gonna keep picking on goblin as the staple for this example

The drama reaches a point where it’s time to just pull out the sword … these folks are crying going back-and-forth…

It’s not enough for me to say “ if I was in that position I would hesitate on this situation as well”

We’re here to be entertained right? So im like… yeah I get it move forward.

As a viewer I’m like … just pull it out so we can get to the next phase. Lol.

We don’t need to stare at you crying…..

That being said not every actor or writing carries a sad scene

In life gives you tangerines people were crying often but the moment or challenge was always evolving. The plot didn’t feel like it ever stood in one place

And IU was often funny or amusing when she cried.

You gotta have another emotion to complement sadness

Hope for example, humor, or even changing the reason and situation for sadness at reasonable pace.

You can be sad … and they find a way to escalate the problem and keep making the situation worst. So even though it’s sad the steaks keep you invested because the story is moving

So to reiterate … as long as the sad show has a captivating enough plot, or a healthy mix of other emotions it’s fine as none of the shows in my top 10 are even remembered as sad when I think about them… see? That’s because I’m a positive thinker and the show offered me something else that I related to and grabbed onto

Y’all saw sadness … maybe i saw hope? Inspiration, peak villainry…. Etc

I want to conclude and say this is why sometimes the show should not be 16 episodes

12 or 14 could have been suffice? It can still be sad but we don’t need to drag the sadness out

Then it ends on bittersweet

But sometimes trying to stretch a sad show to 16 episodes causes them to stand still in my point of view for 4 to 5 episodes really taking the steam out

For those who watch penthouse …. I cried like two or three times for Cheon Seo Jin… doesn’t even make sense to y’all. I never had an ounce of tears for any of their protagonist of the show

NEVER felt much empathy for Ana in K2…It was for Madam… lol

Our emotions are wildly different in hometown Cha Cha Cha

Maybe there was a lot of sad moments but the characters were literally goaded they built them up gave them their tender story and then moved on to someone else to feel sad about that you also have a connection with

Its okay not be okay and Queen Of tears. I never cared about the ML. Lol.

It was always the FL i felt empathy for or enjoyed their toxicity

Sumin carried “Marry my husband” that was one of my favorite shows. I was never invested in the sadness though

Anyways I think this should be a good explanation for anyone who cares”

I think you should react to "Light Shop" on Disney+. It's in the same Universe as "Moving" but it's Horror show which becomes very emotional in second half. It's only 8 episodes and you 3 already reacted to Moving.

For me I guess it depends dramas like that can either be in direction of a melodrama or a tragic drama. I uses two show with Yoo Seung-ho as an example. I'm Not a Robot is show filled with both comedy and moment that make you feel sad about the situation but the main focus is to keep an optimistic view on the story. On the other hand you have story like that from Missing You. While is does have moments of comedy spliced in the show from episode 1 you understand that the show is going to deal with a lot of serious issues. Another example would be taxi driver while it does have light hearted moments it's more of a satisfying experience when the character get revenge more than anything.

My favorite shows are comedies, but the characters actually have tragic back story. Flex X Cop was a recent REALLY good one, but Secretary Kim and Business Proposal are some classic examples. Hilarious but ya know….trauma! Flex X Cop I like because it has a funny premise and you get all the good cop show qualities AND there’s actually very little romance. It’s nice to have some platonic relationships every now and then

lelmDR.WHO

i insta skip pure cry bait kdramas and anime personally.

Ey I low key cried in the same situations with Seo Jin and Eun Byeol too. Seok Kyeong by the end too. I would count Seo Jin as a protagonist of the show for a stretch. Because she had to fill in while Oh Yoon Hui, Rona Bae, and Su Ryeon were "sidelined'

J Man

We are essentially saying the same thing The stakes stopped being raised and its just sadness. That’s why I described as long as the story is escalating or something is happening it’s fine

Rock Lee

No need to be sorry I know this It’s including in the notes of my poll And sometimes I exclude a show when is the third time they’re about to make me watch another drama of that actor I know not everyone will read the instructions but it’s included in the notes just so that you’re aware that I do already know and I know that that won’t stop everyone “Final Notes: Suggest based on story and engagement, not just because an actor recently starred in something. Keep suggestions concise and clear using the format provided. Let’s find the next great K-drama to react to! 🎬🔥 All Kdrama Genres Are Open Since we have a variety being posted”

Rock Lee

I found the Anna scenes nigh on unwatchable for K2, which is why it's not one of my favourite dramas.

A.

I didn't even think sadness was the issue in DAYS. To me, it was that initially the stakes were being raised, and later on it was much less dynamic in that we were sitting in one central dilemma for a long time.

A.

I'm sorry to break it to you but this is happening because you guys are being recommended & watch trendy & popular dramas. Most shows are popular because of the popularity or looks of the actor/actress or both, not because of their plots. Don't get me wrong, I have watched and loved these dramas. But they don't have a strong plot for a reaction channel.

Selamawit Yeruk

I'm totally with you on feeling more for Madam than Ana in K2.

Jerome

Also wanna say 1. Thanks for the reply 2. Ive been on this petreon for years but don't comment much. I think u do fantastic work lee and this channel really separates itself with its equally hilarious and often insightful post episode discussions that i think are the best in the business. I have no idea how u guys aren't more popular

StayBirdy

But you know that we are OK with romantic drama right?

Rock Lee

This seems to have been a running topic since the goblin days. It seems like the most popular well known dramas are the opposite of what the trio wants to watch. I wonder if that's because kdrama popularity leans romantic drama more than action
