Comments

I hear you about the comments and having more context than you might have (and wanting to avoid spoilers). I can only speak to my own experience: I only watch reactions after I watch an episode myself first. I don’t watch breakdowns, I don’t watch trailers, I don’t follow the conversation on social media. If I put in the effort to write a comment or something, it’s my own thoughts (and I take care staying within the context of the conversation). In fact, I’m usually behind the release schedule because I watch this with my wife (and we don’t always have the time for a live action show like this when it drops). I would say I have adapted the “Blind Wave” mentality to avoid spoilers (and certain trailers entirely) to avoid external influences.

was waiting for some Cobel sauce, finally. the color palette was crazy this episode, blue gray silver, same as Harmony

"led her to develop severance as a way to compartmentalize suffering and keep harmful memories separate." --- that's the part of the show that fascinates me right now. The way Cobel created severance wasn't meant to diminish negative emotions or experiences but to force a split into your psyche. Like is Lumon trying to split the Id, Ego, and Superego through the use of severance? what are they testing, since they're not trying to diminish fear or trauma as seen through Gemma's multiple rooms.

The line about huffing ether at 8 years old to get ready for 10 hours manning the vat really paints a picture.

A.

Helena’s father is Jame Eagan, the CEO of Lumon. In 1x09, during the Lumon gala, Helly (as an innie) meets her father in the bathroom. He recalls how, as a child, she saw a prototype severance chip and excitedly said, "Everyone should have one!" So she's definitely discarded as the creator of the chip. In 2x06, at the Chinese restaurant, Helena Eagan (her outie) calls herself "basically the owner" of Lumon. When Mark jokingly suggests she invented severance, she corrects him: "That was my father, you should meet him sometime." However, we now know Jame Eagan didn’t invent severance either. Another classic case of a corporation blatantly stealing an invention and giving absolutely no credit. Of course there are always teams that develop an idea and make it work, but the real architect behind the severance chip is Harmony Cobel and she has proof. We had some clues suggesting she was deeply knowledgeable about the science behind severance: She was the only one that knew that Petey showed signs of reintegration on the severed floor, despite official claims that reintegration was impossible. She also removed his chip at his funeral with ease and conducted various experiments with Ms. Casey and Mark testing if memories bled through the severance. Her exact motivations to create the chip remain unclear, but her past may explain why she came up with the idea. She endured harsh labor conditions so extreme that workers had to huff ether, which could have led her to develop severance as a way to compartmentalize suffering and keep harmful memories separate.
