Experimenting with "voices" for future animations
Added 2024-07-29 03:50:21 +0000 UTCI've been thinking about animations again, and something on my mind in particular is how to do voices for characters. Yall probably noticed in my past animations that I do text scrolling for dialogue and have RPG-style beeping to accompany them (I don't believe there's an official term for it -- I call it "voice chittering"), and some characters have more vocal-sounding "beeps" that chitter away to give them the impression of voices. Undertale is an example of a game that does this for its main characters, and it's an interesting process I've wanted to apply for my animations (hence why I've borrowed Undertale sound effects for the voices a lot lol)
I don't wanna just rely on the same old sounds again, and have had to experiment with my own. Here's a fake-sounding story: a long time ago, I actually asked Toby Fox about how he made those sounds. I'm not sure if it's still the case anymore but he published his personal email on his website and publicly pledged to answer all messages even when Undertale was super green, and he did get back to me explaining how he did the sampling for his characters' "voices". Thanks, Toby T_Tb
I've been too lazy to make things of my own because of business, but I finally found a quick moment today to do some sourcing. Toby's character voices seemed really assorted and random (spoilers: Sans' chitters come from Patrick Star. no, really), and I decided to test things out by sampling streamers from Hololive. Lemme know what yall think!
PS: if anyone can identify all 5 people I've sourced... I dunno what I can promise you right now but I definitely gotta give you some kind of reward lol

I feel like the 4th voice(only male voice I guess) was markiplier for some reason. Every bone in my body lit up and my first thought was mark

2024-07-31 16:52:33 +0000 UTCI think text blips would be really cute but if you do eventually end up hiring VAs I highly recommend CastingCallClub, I applied to something (didn't get the part, unfortunately) but when I was making an account I was able to specify I was transfemme!

2024-07-30 17:43:36 +0000 UTCYou could always offer fans the chance to have their voices used. Just get a small script for people to record themselves reading, send them to you, then you can pick from among them.

2024-07-29 08:58:52 +0000 UTCWhich is why I'm less leery on it. I guess I've heard too many unethical sources and generated voice clips that I get a knee jerk reaction to even something like this lol. But ya keeping it as bloops is much better than the alternatives.

2024-07-29 07:09:48 +0000 UTCGiven the state of the industry, I'm sure someone would take you up on the offer. But even pitch shifting like what Undertale did could help as well, so long as again it was manually done and in collaboration with the performer

2024-07-29 07:05:27 +0000 UTCImportant in this context, these indistinct bleeps ARE the "voices" in their entirety. They're not attempting to be used to pass off as someone communicating messages, they're basically just sound effects in a way that using a guitar adds to the sound palette of a music track.

2024-07-29 06:21:26 +0000 UTCUnderstandable concerns! Once again, this is just an experiment to see that I can actually do this and make something quality -- perhaps I should source from folks who I can directly credit or compensate, although I am very much just kind of a D-list internet person making projects independently and I dunno what the scope of fair use is regarding this (if Viacom didn't crack down on Toby Fox for sampling Spongebob for Sans...)

2024-07-29 06:19:47 +0000 UTCIf you did this, but hired VAs, even amature ones, with the promise that all sampling was strictly temporary (and they got credit,) you could make this work. But please approach this with as much of a mind towards working artists as you can.

2024-07-29 06:14:37 +0000 UTCEh, I don't like sampling people you aren't paying. And on general I'm staunchly against artificial generation of real people's voices to make them say things they never did.

2024-07-29 06:11:26 +0000 UTCOh shit, sans being sampled from Patrick is confirmed? I remember seeing a youtube video where someone recreated the chitter with the "Ma" in one of Patrick's lines "Maybe it's the way you're dressed?" Cool to have it confirmed years later lol.

2024-07-29 04:04:51 +0000 UTCReally cool! I think voice one is Gura and 3 Amelia but I'm not super sure on the other 3, especially the male sounding one as I don't watch Holostars as much.
