VaM2 HDRP skin shader experimenation
Added 2020-01-20 19:17:00 +0000 UTC
A little video showing some experimentation with the HDRP skin shader in VaM2. This shader has a blur pass which can allow for various levels of softness, including full-on fantasy (Illusion mode?). Bloom post-processing is on here, but at a very low level. Another aspect this video shows is the auto-exposure system, which is also part of the built-in post-processing that comes with HDRP. This can be seen when the light is moving. Notice the background changing intensity as a result of the auto-exposure control. All of the skin settings and post-process effects will be tweakable in game, giving much more customization options for your scenes and screenshots. VaM2 Phase 1 will include post-process effect experimentation. VaM2 Phase 2 will include the skin shader param customization. Please ignore the low-quality ears in this video and previous screen shots, as this is a base, non-smoothed model. Phase 2 will have subdivision and smoothing and will look much better.

Wish you would write your own Lip-sync plugin or use some of that money to purchase one etc.

17 Jan: "1.19 is well underway and is going to be worked on for a few more weeks before release". It's been a month, Mesh, can we have an update?

Would we be lucky enough to have some kind of idea of a date (period) to dream of touching this version 2.0 ? :)

perhaps moving to HDRP might enable adding real time indirect lighting - via either VXGI https://github.com/Looooong/Unity-SRP-VXGI , or the upcoming Unity DXR support https://forum.unity.com/threads/unity-experimental-hdrp-dxr.656092/. One can only hope.

2.X is being released on this Patreon account and not be a separate pledge. I don't have details yet, but I plan on supporting custom shaders in 2.X, so just about anything should be possible. Performance is the biggest hurdle to something like what you describe.

Performance is #1 consideration in 2.X. I mentioned it 1st in the last post in the 2.X update section. "What is 2.X? 2.X is the new branch of VaM that is focused on new technology to bring improved performance, physics, and rendering quality to VaM." 2.X will continue to be a sandbox/animation/simulation system, although more in-house automation systems are planned for 2.X than exist in 1.X.

Meshed! This is purely awsome! Can't wait for the first release.
Will it be released for patreons of 1.X? Or will it be a separate patreon?
As a stocking/pantyhose/bodystocking lover I have a question.
With HDRP system provide a possiblility to create a proper stockings/nylon shader that can simulate the optical and physical properties of the stockings in the real world? Like for example the darkening/density of the material at the edges and in narrower places.
This works really great here:
https://www.daz3d.com/nylon-stockings-for-genesis-3-and-8-females
Maybe we could use some simmilar technique?
Thanks!

Looks nice but what i really want from 2.x is performance and interactivity, 1.x is plagued by the same performance issue's as most Unity stuff & even with all the latest work from community developers its still very much a glorified animation tool, that has made me lose interest and eventually caused me to recently lower my support tier. I feel like you should focus on these two issue's before trying to push for more realistic lights/skin etc, most of us simply cant afford a 2080 Ti. Please consider doing a poll asking what people want from 2.x

My question is will this 2.0 version of the game take even more PC to run. I sure hope not because I can't afford a new rig right now.

2.X is going to move all automation to a new plugin/addon system so it can be tweaked more easily by advanced users. The plugin/addon system in 2.X will be much better than 1.X, and I plan on developing addons in-house to do more automation than was seen in 1.X. I don't have plans for exactly what you are asking for, but it should be possible.

The biggest contributor to performance in 1.X is skin physics. I won't have 2.X skin physics implemented for quite a while, but the goal is to run much better than 1.X. This part is being completely rewritten. HDRP is more expensive to render in general than the rendering system used in 1.X, but there are exceptions to that. HDRP can render more lights in single pass off the shader, where 1.X required separate passes for each point/spot light.

Looks good, please make the auto-exposure switchable to on-off in some games i observed lighting issues with such systems. Don`t know if its also a problem in VAM.

Is there any kind of voice/AI integration planned? So we can talk with the actors and trigger story elements, etc. It would be awesome to integrate some kind of chat bot to an actor.

Unity HDRP does support ray tracing now, but I have not tried it out yet. I'm not sure how well it will work in this type of application, but I will definitely try it out and add support for it if it makes sense.

The skin and lips look amazing - gives an almost "Realdoll" latex texture to her. Is this using the Unity HDR translucent (subsurface scattering?) shader? I think the edges of the eyes still look a bit artificial with the hard line around the eyelids/eyeball - I seem to remember some 3D render techniques (for non-real time 3D rendering) years ago that got rid of this somehow to make the eyes ultra realistic.

Hi guru Meshed :)
...Unbelievable!π―π₯
So realistic skin and all the small details, shades. This version must wait and see with your own eyes.
I would like to hope that there will be RTX ray tracing support in the rendering of human shapes.
We really hope that you have enough strength and motivation to realize all the possibilities in the next 2.0 version. We will support you. Thank you for your fantastic work.
