I'm starting a series of posts about specific characters in the game. I thought it might be a good way to gauge how people feel about them in general (so feel free to comment!) and fill in some blanks in world-building that haven't been answered yet (but hopefully will be soon with a system I'm planning to implement).
Today's focus: Soren, our resident Apprentice Linguist and king of deep V's.
Despite his almost-flawless Caladori accent, Soren is actually from outside of the kingdom, from a free principality called Avanza located south of Calador. One of three such principalities lining Burgundy Bay, Avanza is a warm place with rolling hills of vineyards producing some of the world's best wines.
The so-called Free Principalities weren't always free. In fact, they used to be parts of the Kingdom before the Burgundy Wars, where the three united against the King of Calador to pursue sovereignty. They timed their revolt perfectly, as the King was busy with another war up north, and had a gentle disposition besides, so they saw victory after a short campaign that, as one historian put it, "saw more wine spilled than blood."
"A View of Avanza" by Teodoro Asanti (928 S.A.)
Soren likes words, and he will take any opportunity to talk about them to you. To him, words are things to be dug up and studied, like an archeologist would study a ruin. And once studied, they reveal history but also ideas that might have otherwise been forgotten. Why the fascination with forgotten things? Well, maybe you should ask him yourself when you get a chance.
As a romantic prospect, Soren might seem a bit stand-offish at first. But if, as Saheila puts it in one possible playthrough, "you like to work for your meals," he might just be worth it.
