The militarization of Ordo Mediare and the timeline summary

Although the Crusades decline in 13th century, the military organizational system left a lasting impact on many places, with Ordo Mediare being one such example. As local conflicts increased, serious casualties caused by chevauchées and bandits, leading to the proportion of men decreasing, the sisters—isolated from secular society—found their opportunity to fight like men as militia. After their beginning of militarized and successful achievements, People in the regions were convinced to accept the presence of these armed nuns. The Church never officially accepted them as a legitimate military order, but they provided covert support nonetheless.

"Even as they wielded swords, they were indeed fulfilling their duties."

The first armed sister of Ordo Mediare canonized, acknowledging the legitimacy of the use of the sword for peacekeeping, and the sisters within the same Order permitted to continue following the path.

The Ordo Mediare's influence was under a certain control. Their armament level was restricted, they only had limited forges, and metal equipment could only be obtained through imports. For both secular and The Church, the rule of nunnery convent which only let women to join effectively controlled the Order's growth. The rarity of female knights which limited noble intervention and sponsorship, and with the prohibition of marriage among the sisters made it no way to become a secular society itself. Despite these limitations, the Ordo Mediare sisters still managed to sustain this armed organization for nearly two centuries.

In 15th century, as secular influence grew and military and social structures changed, the justification for Ordo Mediare's militarization became increasingly tenuous. With the help of their connections to seculars, The Order had peacefully disarmed and returned to their original monastic duties as nunnery.

This is very cool background, and the thought to the realistic implications of their existence and how that changes across time is chef's kiss! Good stuff!
